While many of us on Labor Day are enjoying a break from work, St. John Paul II challenges us to see our work as more than just a necessity of daily life. It is inherently valuable because it is one of the ways we are made in the image and likeness of God, the Creator!

"For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them."

When two or more are gathered together, we also know that sometimes there can be conflict. In his homily this weekend, Msgr. Francis highlights our responsibility to friend and neighbor that Jesus mentions earlier in the Gospel.

"We express love in concrete ways and not merely in good intentions and kind thoughts. We are tested, in proving our claim to love God by how concrete we are in charity to our fellow human beings. This is why St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans reminds us that our singular obligation to other people is to love them and work for their good. We do not restrict the responsibility and commitment to love only those who share our beliefs. It extends beyond ethnicity; beyond economic, social, religious, and political boundaries. It is our duty to advise and correct those who think otherwise and get them to repent and grow in the love of God and neighbor."

Join us for Mass this weekend to hear the rest!

We’re pleased to welcome Ryan Dykstra as our new Assistant Organist! Ryan will accompany the choir at the 11 AM Sunday Mass and also play at the 1 and 5 PM Masses.

“I’m very excited to contribute to the music at St. Philip! I come from a very musical family; we would host concerts in our home as well as weekly hymn sings. I converted to Catholicism two years ago here at St. Philip; coming to this welcoming community has been nice!

I started on the violin at 6 years old and the piano at 8, before turning to the organ when I was 12. I’ve been a guest recitalist across DFW and had the honor of being invited to be the opening piano artist for the International Holy Week Festival in Popayán, Colombia. I earned my Colleague of the American Guild of Organist certification at the age of 17, and I am preparing for my Associate of the American Guild of Organists.

My favorite genre of organ music to listen to and play is French Organ Music. If you are unfamiliar, you might recognize Widor’s Toccata from Symphony No. 5. which has been played often at St. Philip! A personal favorite of mine is Organ Sonata No. 1 III. Finale – Alexandre Guilmant.

As the new Assistant Organist, I look forward to supporting and inspiring congregational singing.”
