Saint Mark Lutheran Church - Now Known as Amazing GRACE Lutheran Church

Saint Mark Lutheran Church - Now Known as Amazing GRACE Lutheran Church Amazing Grace is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are also a member congregation of the New Jersey Synod of the ELCA.

Saint Mark is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Lutherans are Christians who believe that they are a part of a community of faith that began with the gift of the Holy Spirit. The name Lutheran comes from Martin Luther (1483-1546), who was a monk, a scholar, a professor of the Old Testament, a translator of the Bible, a preacher, and a reformer. For Luther and Lutherans, interaction with God is centered in God's divine love and grace, not in our achievements.

Emanuel Nine, martyrs, 2015
On June 17, 2015, Clementa C. Pinckney, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Lee Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson were murdered by a self-professed white supremacist while they were gathered for Bible study and prayer at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (often referred to as Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina. Pastors Pinckney and Simmons were both graduates of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. A resolution to commemorate June 17 as a day of repentance for the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine was adopted by the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on August 8, 2019. Congregations of the ELCA are encouraged reaffirm their commitment to repenting of the sins of racism and white supremacy which continue to plague this church, to venerate the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine, and to mark this day of penitence with study and prayer.

As our NJ delegation makes their way to DC today, we join them in prayer.

God, our healer and our refuge, we pray for all who suffer from gun violence. With your mercy, bind up their wounds, restore their bodies, and heal their hearts. Comfort the mourners and embrace the lonely. With your might, empower us to change this broken world. Make us advocates for a stable society, alive with hope in you. We ask this through the one once wounded for our transgressions and now standing with us in our sorrows, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
