Knights of Columbus #2248 Madison / Florham Park

Knights of Columbus #2248 Madison / Florham Park The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Organization with 1.9 Million members whose principle work involves helping others. Our chapter was founded in 1921.

From the moment of our founding in 1882, charity has been the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. We are men of faith and men of action. In 2014, we set new records in charitable giving for the 16th consecutive year. Our charitable contributions increased in 2014 by more than $3.4 million over the previous year to a record $173,550,680. In addition, we achieved our highest level of charita

ble service, volunteering more than 71.5 million hours. The number of service hours contributed by members rose in 2014 by more than a million hours over the 2013 total, with each member donating nearly a full workweek on average. Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other purely local charities, the opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless. We undertake these acts of charity because we see those in need through the eyes of faith. Moreover, in the Knights of Columbus, we approach these acts of charity together. Pope Benedict XVI calls this the “practice of love...as a community.”

If you’d like to be a part of an international organization of more than 1.9 million Catholic men whose principal work involves helping others in need, we'd like to meet you and invite you to join us. Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 15,100 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea. All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles:

Charity – Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one another. That doesn’t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that – as a Knight of Columbus – you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity – The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another. Patriotism – Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it’s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.

The Florham Park/Madison Knights of Columbus Swiss Style Round Robin Chess Tourney was played on Saturday 3/36 from 8:30am to about 12:00pm in the Holy Family Gym in Florham Park. This year 38 players participated in two separate divisions from as far away as Succasunna to So. Orange. The A division had 10 and was for the 6th through 8th graders, and B had 28 and was for the 3rd through 5th graders. Two points were awarded for a win, and one point for a draw or stalemate, and then total points were averaged with total games played to determine the winners. The highest game/point average (avg.) a player could obtain (must go undefeated) is 2.00.

Division A had an interesting finish as there was a tie for 1st and 2nd and then 3rd and 4th. This was the first time this has occurred in the tourney’s 15 year history. All 4 players of these players were able to play all the other players once or a total of 9 games! The 1st place trophy was won by Lachlan Witt, a 6th grader at St. Mary’s in Denville and 2nd was Eric Warga, an 8th grader at St. Therese in Succasunna. Both had a 1.56 game/point average or lost 2 games and won 7. However Lachlan beat Eric in the regular match which gave him the “tiebreaker” win for the 1st place trophy! Oscar Paris, a 6th grader at Chatham Middle School, took the 3rd place trophy and Andrew White, a 7th grader at St. Therese took the 4th place ribbon. Both had 1.33 averages but Oscar won the regular match giving him the “tiebreaker” edge! 5th place ribbon was won by Gavin Coelho of St. Mary, and Daniel Corriago, an 8th grader at Holy Family, in Florham Park took the 6th place ribbon. Other fine play was turned in by Vinayak Sharma, John Potter, Pru Chirra and Brian Miller (Ridgedale Middle School, Florham Park).

Divison B was clear cut (no ties) but because of the large field of 28 players there were many more games were played! For the 2nd year in a row, Roman Brustein, a 2nd grader at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, in Livingston took the 1st place trophy with a game/point average of 1.89! Roman played an outstanding “18” games and only lost 1 game! Rock Huebner, a 5th grader at Jefferson Elementary in South Orange, was that only other player that beat Roman and he took the 2nd place trophy with 2 other loss and fewer games played. His average was 1.64. Sean Murphy, a 5th grader at St. Therese was another player who played “18” games, had all wins except for only 2 losses, 3 ties and was a close 3rd place to Rock with a 1.61 average. 4th, 5th and 6th place ribbons went to Nicholas Kartamgshev, a 4th grader at Central Ave Elementary School in Madison, Dina Brustein, a 4th grader at Mt. Pleasant and Roman’s sister, and Vikalp Sharma, a 4th grader at St. Mary; respectively. Other fine play was turned in by Sri Sri Chirra, Liam Kohler, Anthony and Charlie Warga, PJ and Billy Mackinson, Cris Sebastian, Ryan Fox, Anthony Corriago (Daniel’s brother/Florham Park), Sean Rave, Nicholas Niemczyk, Garrett Taylor (St. Vincent in Madison), Mark and Kevin Foerster (Brooklake School, Florham Park), Aidan Fox, Angelo Clemons (Holy Family), Dana Gesregan, Tyler Backer, Caitlin Beck, and Tyler Easterly.

All players received a free chess game, and a hot dog lunch. “Judging by the “robust” cheers by all the players for the winners at the end of the tourney, “good sportsmanship” was truly displayed, and the players all had a great time!” said Joe O’Brien the Chess Chairman. Other Knight Chess helpers were Ed Halverson – score keeper, Joe Corriago and Bob Zebick (Chess Coach for St. Therese’s team, and Bill Gregory who handled the lunch duty.
