We are on week three in our series on how to be prepared for what happens in life. We began by looking at how to deal with temptation and then last week we looked at how to deal with trials. This week we are going to look at how to prepare for betrayal.
One of the most famous betrayals in history was the betrayal of Julius Caesar. No treachery is worse than betrayal by a family member or friend. Julius Caesar knew such treachery. Among the conspirators who assassinated the Roman leader on March 15, 44 was Marcus Junius Brutus. Caesar not only trusted Brutus, he had favored him as a son. According to Roman historians, Caesar first resisted the onslaught of the assassins. But when he saw Brutus among them with his dagger drawn, Caesar ceased to struggle and, pulling the top part of his robe over his face, asked the famous question, "You too, Brutus?"
I was reminded of this incident this week when I was reading about Judas Iscariot. This was the greatest betrayal in human history. But what can we learn from this tragic event? What does it teach us? What immediately comes to your mind when you hear the name Judas? Is it revulsion or traitor? Traitors are always evil! Is it sympathy? Is it anger, hurt, disappointment? What emotion or emotions does his name provoke?
Every one of us has experienced the pain of betrayal, dishonesty, gossip and hurt from someone close to us. And, at times, we have been that kind of person to someone else.
So, what does God have to say about our response when a friend/loved one fails us? How can we prepare for such an atrocity as betrayal? How can we heal from it? In this week’s message we are going to try to answer those questions and more. But here is a better question for us to ponder: Since we cannot change the situation or even the person, how can we allow God to change us so that we respond in a way that would please Him? That is our goal for this message.
Join us this week as we learn how to prepare for the hurt, disappointment and betrayal by those we love and trust. All are welcome!
