Fremont County citizens have formed a working group to approach the City of Florence Colorado Government and Florence City Council about the complete cancellation of the July 4th parade.
"The intent is to propose a more logical solution of a parade and activities celebrating America's 250th Birthday on July 4th in downtown Florence and surrounding area, without the water aspects of the normal "Wet + Dry" parade due to water restrictions / drought conditions," said Amy Dawn Bourlon-Hilterbran, Co-Chair of the working group, "the public outcry was immediate. It's the only parade on July 4th in the area, it's our country's 250th birthday - not having a parade to celebrate is not an option and many citizens feel city leaders didn't include, or even consider them, in this decision. Our community will rise to the occasion and hopefully our city leadership will find their citizens can serve as partners in to ensure meaningful community events and continued traditions."
The working group already includes several community leaders, nonprofit organizations and veterans' groups. The group formed almost immediately after the breaking news of the parade cancellation by Royal Gorge Region News.
"A meeting will be announced soon for those interested in being a part of the process to urge Florence city leaders to work with their citizens to ensure a celebratory parade and activities on July 4th for our country's 250th birthday," said Co-Chair Jim Sheridan, "we're calling it 'America's Parade', and are actively engaging multiple entities to provide the solutions to this problem. Not having a July 4th parade in Florence IS a problem that needs solving."
The meeting will be held at Emergent Campus in Florence.
