As noted in today’s edition of This Week in New Harmony, yesterday, August 18, 2020, at its 98th Stated Meeting and historic first online meeting, the Presbytery of New Harmony took three major actions, and we would like to offer more information specifically regarding one of those actions.

Inquirer Caitlyn Hathaway, a member of First, Hartsville, and rising Senior at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Richmond, was examined and unanimously approved as a Candidate for the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA).

Ruling Elder Delcia Harper-Baxter, a member of Goodwill, was examined, unanimously approved, and commissioned to serve as Commissioned Pastor of New Harvest in Florence.

The presbytery voted 68 to 1 in favor of a recommendation to permanently close Camp P*e Dee. This vote was the culmination of a lengthy, serious process of research, analysis, and prayer by a dedicated Administrative Review Committee, composed of a diverse cross-section of NHP.

The Guiding Council has authorized the formation of an Administrative Commission to make a recommendation on use of the property and assets.

We give thanks to God for the treasured memories, lasting relationships, and lifelong impact Camp P*e Dee has had on so many. For more than 60 years, Camp P*e Dee has welcomed children and adults, shared God’s love, and been a place of rest and recreation. We give thanks to God for Camp P*e Dee’s ministry. We hope to celebrate Camp P*e Dee’s history and ministry at some time in the future.

Please contact Gavin Meek, Transitional Executive Presbyter & Stated Clerk ([email protected]), or Julie Cox, Associate Executive Presbyter & Associate Stated Clerk ([email protected]), with any questions. May God bless you.

Many of our NHP pastoral leaders in the Sumter area are a part of an effort of leaders of faith to respond to racism. It involves, among other things, marches and gatherings, along with a statement in which 68 (and counting) Sumter area faith leaders signed. Rev. Dr. Ella Busby (2nd Sumter), Rev. Dr. Frank Colclough (Cousar Memorial, Harmony, Mizpah and Mt. Sinia) and Rev. Nick Cheek (1st Sumter) were a part of the nine member task force to draft the document that then came back to the larger group for revision and approval. Attached is the document and by following this link, Sumter Leaders of Faith statement, you will hear and see the task force read it. It is powerful and we are grateful for all our pastoral leaders in the Sumter area for making such a bold statement of faith! May our faith and justice convictions and actions be strengthen as we “build relationships that honor God” knowing that, “This, by God’s grace, is a work of the Holy Spirit which will bring about transformation in our churches, homes and communities.”

God bless. Gavin

GUIDING COUNCIL CONTINUES TO RECOMMEND NOT HAVING FACE TO FACE ACTIVITIES

Your Guiding Council met Thursday, June 27. With the rising cases of the Coronavirus, they continue to strongly advise that in-person worship and activities NOT resume at this time. They know that resuming in-person worship and activities is a decision of the Session and not the presbytery or its council; they affirm this in our Presbyterian polity and Constitution. They also know that there are Sessions that have either resumed in-person worship and/or activities or have decided to do so in the near future, utilizing the Guidelines recently distributed; they would, of course, urge err on the side of more, rather than less, precautions and safeguards. Please let them know if there are ways that they can be of assistance and support
