Hey, did you know that back in the 1st Century people believed that if you were blind, or paralyzed, or crippled in any way that it was because of their sin or their parents' sin? Question, how big & bad of a sinner do you have to be before God refuses to forgive you? Answer, no one is too far gone to be saved by Jesus! Maybe someone reading this right now who hasn't surrendered their life to Christ and the reason is that you think you're too far gone? Maybe you think you have gone down some roads and been a part of some things that you don't think it is possible for God to love you? Listen, I will say it again, no one is too far from God to be saved & loved by Jesus. Jesus already knows every detail about your entire life before He saves you. We can't earn it & we certainly don't deserve it but only by God's Grace we are forgiven and accepted into the family of God. Even when the world sees our failures Jesus sees our future. Even when we are at our worst & we define ourselves by how the world views us, Jesus sees us for who He is transforming us to be. So maybe it's time that we stop running from God and start running to Him! Hey, have you noticed that there seems to be a lot of confusion in the world today?? It also seems as though we live in a world that is lacking a lot in the common sense department. We currently have a sitting Supreme Court Justice who in her own confirmation hearing could not define what a woman is. She even said in the hearing, quote, "I'm not a biologist." Do you really need to be a biologist to tell the difference between a male & female?? I mean, I'm not a botanist but I can tell you what a fern is. Just take any 5 or 6 year old kid to the playground with other kids and without any prompting they will immediately know which kids are boys and which kids are girls. Maybe it should alarm us that a 5 year old child knows the difference between a boy & a girl but a Supreme Court Justice does not. But then again, I guess that's why shampoo companies feel compelled to put directions on their shampoo bottles. Listen, we currently live in a culture that can't seem to define, or is attempting to redefine, a man or a woman, who can give birth and who can't, what a baby is, what pronouns mean, and what marriage is. So who do you think is behind this cultural confusion? It's simple, it's Satan. But listen, he is not just content on causing confusion in our culture. He is also working feverishly to cause spiritual confusion in our culture, especially when it comes to who Jesus is. And doesn't it make sense that if Satan can confuse people about something as basic, as simple, and as obvious as what a boy or girl is, he can certainly confuse & deceive people about who Jesus is. Hey, have you ever been at a point of your life when you felt like you were in a great place with God? You were feeling close to God, you felt His approval, His power, His Peace, His love. Then out of nowhere something happens, a friend's betrayal, a loved one dies, your marriage hits the rocks, the diagnosis comes, or the sin that you thought you had moved on from comes back again. And when it happens it just spirals you from the place & nearness to God that you were just experiencing, to a place where you start listening & believing the enemy and his lies. Maybe you're experiencing this right now in your life or just coming out of it. Please know that you are NOT alone! Many believers will at some time in their life experience this. We will experience the feeling of being distant from God, feeling like God is absent in our life, feeling like we've failed God, convinced that we can't overcome the sin in our lives. And inadvertently we begin to be tempted to walk away from God. Well, I gotta tell you that you're not alone and you're not abnormal in experiencing these types of feelings. Listen, here is the Good News, it's in those places of fear, uncertainty, doubt, and being completely overwhelmed with life that you will see that our God is Faithful!! Hey, those of you who have served in the military know that if you're on watch that you have been put in a place, you have been put in a position, and your role is not about YOU! Your role is to defend some other people that need you to defend them. And make no mistake about it, we are at war! We have an enemy that is constantly looking to steal, kill, and destroy. That is why it is so important that as followers of Christ we be watchful and on alert. We are at war and I hope you realize it's happening every single day. And if we're not on watch and on guard the enemy will come in and take what it wants. And what it wants the most is to destroy the family, your family, and your kids. What we need now more than ever is a bunch of men willing to stand up and be ready to do battle with our enemy. We need a bunch of men to rise up and declare, Not on my watch!! Question....what defines a man? Is a real man someone who loves football, MMA Fighting, & NASCAR? Is it someone who owns a Harley and routinely lifts at the gym? Is a real man's favorite color camo and his favorite meal is pretty much all meats & cheeses? Actually, none of what I just described to you makes a man a man. It may make a man cool, but those things are not what makes a man a man. Basically, it takes a lot more to be a man than just having an XY chromosome. So, then the question becomes what makes a man a man? Well, to find out all we have to do is open the Bible. 1st Corinthians 16 tells us that men are called to be prophets (teaching truth), priests (interceding in prayer), servants/kings (leading with wisdom), providers (meeting physical & spiritual needs), and protectors (ensuring safety). Hey, God is not a God of confusion. He loves you and He knew what He was doing when He created you as a man. So, if manhood is God's idea, then you gotta ask, what went wrong? How in the world as a society have we gone from Teddy Roosevelt, John Wayne, Chuck Norris, to grown men with beards & dresses mocking the Lord's supper at the last Summer Olympics?? What has gone so wrong with our society? Well, the ultimate answer of what went wrong is sin. We have an enemy called the devil that wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Listen men, we can never be all of what God has created us for in being a man until we bow down and surrender to Jesus. That is the beginning of what it means to be a real man. Hey, can you believe that at some point in human history, that women who became older with a little less responsibility would sit around and gossip??😅 Well, it was evidently a problem in the 1st Century because the Apostle Paul writes about it in the book of Titus. In Titus 2:3 Paul is calling out the older women of Crete to not sit around and gossip & drink too much. Think about it, of all the things to warn the older women of Crete about this is at the top of the list. Why?? Because when you accuse, slander, or gossip with your mouth you're actually teaming up with the devil. The Bible tells us that the devil is the accuser of the brethren! What am I talking about? Well, if you start a conversation out with, can you believe what she is wearing? Or maybe you have started a conversation with, can you believe what she did? Do you ever do that kind of thing?? Have you ever realized that it doesn't take very much energy to tear anything down? Just look at the internet! Wowzer, talking about a LOT of spewing of negativity, Facebook is full of it. Instead, what we are supposed to do is use that very same instrument called our mouth, to partner up with God who is a creator and not one that tears down. Titus 2:3 instructs older women to TEACH what is good and to TRAIN the younger women to do the same. So instead of seeing a younger woman and being critical of her, how about being sympathetic to her. All the while understanding that what she probably needs is an older woman in her life to help her learn who she is in Christ. Listen older men & older women, if you're not faithfully pouring into our upcoming generation then you have lost the right to complain about them and the condition of our society. Let me close with this, the Bible is not an old book as many see it, but rather a timeless book that God has personally gifted us. Hey, some of you that will read this probably know that after 33 years of working in education in the Flora School District that I will be retiring at the end of May. I get asked a lot about what I will do when I retire. I have a LOT on my bucket list of things I want to do and places that I want to go. But primarily my goal, as it should be for all retirees, is to stay in the game! What do I mean by that? Well, as a follower of Christ we are called to fulfill the Great Commission, which is sharing the Gospel Message of Jesus Christ to all the world. Christians never get to retire from the Great Commission, nor should they want to. Titus 2:2 tells us to be "Sober Minded" as followers of Christ. What is that referring to? Well, I believe it is reminding us "Older Men" that as we age, we have the tendency to become grumpy. I mean there is even movies about "Grumpy Old Men." By the way, who doesn't love the movie Grumpy Old Men with Walter Matthau & Jack Lemon?? As Christian men we cannot retire from life or the Great Commission. And if we do, then we don't have the right to complain about all the petty things that we typically like to complain about. Listen Christian Old Guys, WE need to set the tone in the church and outside of it as well. People are looking to us to see what a life of Faithfulness looks like. We need to stay in the game! And a part of staying in the game is Discipling & Mentoring the upcoming generation. I'm telling you that there is a generation of 18–35-year-old men that are yearning for some older men role models in their lives. Unfortunately, we live in a world right now that says the older you get the less valuable you are. But in the Kingdom of God every single day that He wakes you up you've got more & more & more value to the Kingdom of God and to His church! So, I will close with this, stay in the game of life for Christ AND don't be GRUMPY!! Sunday will be the day that we gather together to celebrate that we serve a Risen Savior! As followers of Christ, we don't follow a set of rules. We don't just follow a bunch of traditions that require us to jump through a lot of hoops. No! We serve a living Savior and that is what Easter is all about! This Sunday we will be looking at and celebrating the GREATEST miracle in human history. Did you know that there is nowhere in the Bible where it gives an expiration date on the miraculous power of the work of the Holy Spirit. Maybe as you are reading this you find yourself in some real difficulties that life has thrown your way and you have been praying for a miracle. Maybe your heart aches because you're in a season of loneliness, or you're recovering from a broken relationship or a broken marriage? Maybe you didn't get the best news from the doctor, and you're constantly overwhelmed with pain & uncertainty? Maybe your pain is financial, and you're struggling to make ends meet? Maybe your heartaches because your child is suffering in some way and you can't do anything to fix it? After all, as parents we know there is no pain like kid pain. It breaks our heart when we can't take their pain away. Whatever it is for you what you need to know is that God wants to meet you right where you are. Listen, if God can breathe life into His dead Son Jesus & bring Him out of the grave, then surely God can breathe life into whatever situation you find yourself in. Hey, God wants you to believe in His miraculous power. But more importantly He wants you to Believe in Him the Miracle Maker! I will close with this; Jesus died on a real cross and He came out of a real grave. If you believe that with all your heart, then you must also believe that Jesus can really radically change your life. How will He do that? Well, it starts by you surrendering your life to Him, Trusting Him, and making Him Lord of your life! Hey, let me ask you, have you ever needed or prayed for a miracle? Because if you have I've got great news, Jesus is still in the miracle business. As followers of Christ we will soon be celebrating the empty tomb of our risen Savior. Do you know that the same miraculous power that raised Jesus from the dead has no expiration date. God's power has not lessened over the past 2,000 years. The great thing about Jesus is that He enters the very places where our brokenness seems beyond repair. Maybe you're divorced and you wonder if you will ever find love again? Or you're single and you battle loneliness? Maybe you have a child that is hurting and as hard as you try you can't fix their pain? Maybe you feel like an outcast that is ostracized & isolated? Maybe you're battling an addiction that is controlling your life? Maybe you're a prisoner to your depression or anxiety. Maybe you're just overwhelmed with shame of the choices you have made? If any of this describes you please know that God loves you! He sent HIS son Jesus to die on a cross for YOU! Why would God do that for YOU? Not just because He loves you but because He wants to give you freedom. Freedom from your sin, freedom from your addiction, freedom from your fear, freedom from your loneliness, freedom from feeling less than. Jesus wants to give you life and life more abundantly. Hey, the Jesus movement is for ALL people! When you read about the miracles that Jesus performed for people you will see that He meets them in their places of utter desperation. He didn't care about their race, or their gender, or their marital status, or their socioeconomic status, and certainly He didn't care about their past failures. These people that Jesus performed miracles for were from all different walks of life. But what they did all have in common was that they were ALL in need. Let me close with this, YOU matter to Jesus! He loves YOU and He has a purpose for YOU! He doesn't care what you look like, what you have done, or what your current condition is. Just know that Jesus loves YOU and is for YOU! Hey, in case you didn't know doing good deeds for other people will generally not get you in trouble. Giving aid to people without talking about Jesus, people will applaud you. If you love people without talking about Jesus, people will applaud you. But if you give aid, & comfort, and love to people in the name of Jesus, and start telling people about Jesus, well now your problem that needs to be dealt with. Listen, anyone that God uses greatly gets wounded deeply. We can see that throughout the Bible. So please understand, that sometimes as a Christian you will suffer not because you did something wrong but because you did something right. We cannot expect to experience the applause of this world and the anointing of God. They simply do not go hand in hand. But as followers of Christ, we have to respond to the persecution of this world with boldness! The 1st century Christians knew all about being persecuted. But no one knows what it really means to be persecuted in the way that Jesus was persecuted. He purposely left Heaven to come to this earth for the sole purpose of dying for the sins of mankind. But He didn't stop there, on the 3rd day He arose from the grave & conquered death. Why? So that WE can have the HOPE of salvation! So that WE can spend eternity in Heaven with HIM, if WE are willing to make HIM our personal savior.
