What a wonderful day of fun and fellowship our senior group enjoyed on our trip to French Camp! Even the van ride there and back turned into an adventure full of laughter and great conversation.
We began the day with a delicious meal at the Council House CafƩ, known for its homemade favorites and sweet treats. Afterward, we spent time shopping, enjoying ice cream, and exploring the beautiful historic village.
French Camp, established in 1810 by French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur, sits along the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway. Today, it serves as a living history village, offering a glimpse into 1800s Mississippi life with its restored log cabins and historic buildings.
During our visit, we saw the historic carriage of Greenwood LeFlore, a prominent Choctaw chief and U.S. senator, who once traveled from his plantation to Washington, D.C. to meet with Andrew Jackson.
We also enjoyed learning about French Camp Academy, a Christ-centered boarding school founded in 1885 that now operates much of the village as part of its ministry. Highlights included the Alumni Museum, the Huffman Log Cabin Gift Shop, and the pottery studio housed in the former post office.
Some of our photos capture a vintage Farmall Regular tractorāone of the first successful mass-produced row-crop tractorsāalong with other historic farm equipment displayed on the grounds.
Another unique feature of the area is the Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium, home to the largest collection of telescopes in Mississippi and located in one of the stateās few remaining "dark pockets" ideal for stargazing.
It truly was a special day filled with fellowship, learning, and lots of smiles. Weāre thankful for the time spent together and the memories made!
