TESTIMONY TIME
In my teenage years, when I first became a Christian, we used to have a “Testimony Time” during our Wednesday night service at church. I think back on those times fondly. I remember the shout of praise Sister Cooper would let out as she testified of God’s goodness in her life. “I LOVE THE LORD” was always the first phrase to leave her lips as she stood to testify. Her praise was loud and strong. Many times Sister Vaughn would stand up and testify as well. Almost every time she testified she’d shed tears of joy. Brother Johnny was also one who testified frequently and you could always tell how genuine his praise was by the smile on his face and his uplifted hands. What a beautiful variety and display of emotions we witnessed during those testimony times. The variety itself testified to the many ways God manifests His goodness in each of our lives.

Well, this morning, right as the sun was rising, I went to another testimony service. Sister Sky shouted loudly and testified of God’s beauty as the colors of the sunrise lit up the horizon. Sister Stream let tears of joy flow beneath the footbridge I walked across at the park. Brother Pine lifted his branches in praise to the Creator, silhouetted by the beautiful colors that Sister Sky had painted. What a beautiful variety of testimonies I listened to during today’s morning testimony service!

I miss those old testimony services we used to have at church. Sometimes the service went a little extra long because of the testimonies, but that was okay. The preacher’s voice wasn’t the only one heard in those services. Ordinary people who experienced an extraordinary touch from God preached just as beautifully as a PhD in Theology (if not better).

But, there's still a daily testimony service we all can experience every day of our lives. Oh, if we’d just take a few moments in our day to listen to the testimony of nature, we’d all experience a closer walk with the Lord.

Take time to listen each day. Wake up early to experience the beauty of the sunrise … listen to the birds singing (just like a church choir) … listen to the preaching of the sky and the clouds …their voice can be heard everyday, and you can hear it if you’ll just take time and "BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD" (Psalm 46:10).

Psalm 19:1-4
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

THANKFUL FOR THE SMOOTH ROADS
There is a road that I drive down every day on my way to the park where I walk each morning. The road is filled with potholes and bumps … a very real source of aggravation for me. The shocks on my truck are completely worn out thanks to that stretch of road. I’ll be honest … I’ve complained to my wife and neighbors about it dozens of times in the past several years. Well, this morning, after driving down that stretch of road, I didn’t even realize that the whole road had been completely resurfaced. It wasn’t until after I turned off the road that I realized it was completely smooth.

Isn’t that just like us humans? We gripe and complain about all the minor irritations in our lives, yet, when they’ve been removed and all is smooth, we don’t even recognize it. I was convicted in my heart about it this morning. “Why do I complain when things are rough, but don’t recognize and appreciate when things are smooth?” I questioned within myself. As I thought about this deficiency within myself, I got these two “definitions” … 1) When you don’t like something you’re going through, and you talk unfavorably about it, it’s called COMPLAINING. 2) When you’re enjoying something you’re going through and you talk about how much you’re enjoying it, it’s called APPRECIATION or THANKFULNESS.

Both COMPLAINING and THANKFULNESS use our mouths as outlets. Problem is, COMPLAINING is verbalized a whole lot more than THANKFULNESS. I didn’t appreciate the resurfaced road this morning as I was driving on it … I didn’t even recognize the blessing it was. But, I most certainly would have complained if I had hit one of those craters that was still in the road up until yesterday.

Psalm 100:4 tells us to “Enter His gates with THANKSGIVING.” Christians are supposed to be known for their THANKFULNESS. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us “In everything give THANKS for this is the will of God.” Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, GIVING THANKS to God the Father through Him.” On the other hand, unbelievers are known for their lack of THANKFULNESS. Romans 12:1 talks about unbelievers when it says, “Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, NOR WERE THANKFUL.” And, Paul reminds Timothy that in the last days people will be “Lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, UNTHANKFUL, unholy….” Did you catch that? UNTHANKFULNESS is one of the signs of the end times!

So, here’s a convicting question I must ask myself today … Am I best know for my COMPLAINING or for my THANKFULNESS? Do I only recognize, and call attention to, the rough patches in my life … the bumps and potholes … or do I recognize and appreciate the smooth places as well, giving THANKS to God for those blessings?

“Father, forgive me for my complaining in the past. Help me to recognize my blessings and return thanks to You for all the good things in my life. Put a guard on my mouth, that I might not use it as an outlet for complaining but for thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with THANKSGIVING, let your requests be made known to God.

Psalm 141:3
Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips.

Proverbs 21:23
He who guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from distress.

ANOTHER BENEFIT OF STILLNESS
I went to sit on a bench in the sitting area in our backyard when I heard my wife call out to me, “Don’t scare off the baby robin.” I replied, “What baby robin?” “The one sitting still on top of the cedar post with the hanging plant on it,” she said. I looked over to the cedar post and, sure enough, there sat a baby robin perched on the top of it … quiet and still. I wouldn’t have even noticed it had my wife not told me about it. It didn’t flinch the whole time I sat on that bench. Finally, its mother came over and perched beside it and then they both flew off together.

Stillness was that baby robin’s protection. Had it been chirping and flapping its wings, a predator could have easily attacked it and killed it. But, because it remained quiet and still, no harm came to it. When a smaller animal is hyperactive and always moving about, it becomes a target for predators. But quietness and stillness can be its salvation. I’ve seen this same behavior in baby rabbits and even baby deer (fawns). They can be as still as a statue when approached by a predator or human.

This brings me to the thought for today … do you know how to be still? Do you realize that you have an enemy that wants to attack you and cause you harm? When you’re always busying yourself with all kinds of daily activities, you can become a target … a MOVING target. Maybe that’s another reason why Psalm 46:10 tells us to “Be still and know that I am God.” And, maybe that’s why Isaiah 30:15 says, “In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.”

Exodus 14:13
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, STAND STILL and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

PIE IN THE SKY?
I went out for lunch with some friends after church yesterday. At the end of our meal, we all ordered a slice of pie. I was having a difficult time trying to decide between the coconut cream and chocolate pie. I finally made my decision. Three of us ordered coconut cream and one friend ordered chocolate. When the waitress returned with the pie slices, she had two coconut cream and two chocolate. She handed me one of the chocolate pies. Someone remarked, “I thought you ordered coconut cream?” “Yes,” I replied, “But I’m fine with the chocolate.” The waitress apologized profusely for getting my order wrong, but I just replied, “It’s all good … I’ve never met a pie I didn’t like!”

When the waitress brought us our checks, she handed me a small box … it was a free slice of coconut cream pie. Glory! That was one time when being compliant really paid off! HaHa! (P.S. Do you realize that the word COMPLIANT and COMPLAINT has the same exact letters? The “A” and the “I” just change positions. Maybe if we all stopped COMPLAINING so much we’d receive a few extra blessings in our lives.) Anyway, I got two slices of pie (my favorite dessert) for the price of one. What a blessing that was!

Now, just think about the blessings we get in our lives when we yield to God on a daily basis. He doesn’t just give us GOODNESS … He also gives us MERCY. “Surely GOODNESS and MERCY shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6). He doesn’t just give us ETERNAL LIFE … He also gives us ABUNDANT LIFE. “I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). We don’t have to make a choice between whether we want JOY or PEACE … He gives us both … “The fruit of the Spirit is LOVE, JOY, PEACE…” (Galatians 5:22).

Father God has blessings for us in the “HERE AND NOW,” but there’s also more to come in the “SWEET BY AND BY.” Some people accuse Christians of believing in PIE IN THE SKY … but I’ve been getting quite a few slices daily here on Earth!

Psalm 68:19
Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah!
