St Magdalen Church St. Magdalen de Pazzi Church exists to echo Jesus' call to all: "Come and Follow Me!"

Our patroness, Saint Magdalen de Pazzi poetically prayed, “Come Holy Spirit! Consume in us whatever prevents us from being consumed in you.” Although this may seem like a pious expression that only a distant, unfamiliar saint could make, truly, it expresses the deepest desire of each one of us. As we race about, pressured on every side to meet expectations and achieve all the things in life that w

e hope will make us happy, what each of us truly wants, deep down, is that all of our nagging questions, all of our doubts, all of our hurts, and all of our sins would be removed so that we could rest in God’s truth, in his love, in his justice, and in his mercy- in other words, to be totally consumed in God. Our parish exists to echo Jesus’ call to each one of us to follow him, for he is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the answer to our deepest human desires; he is the gate which leads to the loving arms of God our father.

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church!

Some people are so simple that they do not know what uprightness is. Theirs is not the true simplicity of the innocent: they are as far from that as they are far from rising to the virtue of uprightness.

As long as they do not know how to guard their steps by walking in uprightness, they can never remain innocent merely by walking in simplicity. This is why St Paul warns his disciples I hope that you are also wise in what is good, and innocent of what is bad but also Brothers, you are not to be childish in your outlook, though you can be babies as far as wickedness is concerned.

Thus Christ our Truth enjoins his disciples with the words Be cunning as serpents and yet as harmless as doves [Mat. 10:16]. In giving them this admonition, he had to join the two together, so that both the simplicity of the dove might be instructed by the craftiness of the serpent, and the craftiness of the serpent might be tempered by the simplicity of the dove.

So then: when Job is said to have feared God, it is rightly related that he also shunned evil. Fear comes first and charity follows later; and when that has happened, the offense which is left behind in the mind is trodden underfoot by the desires of the heart.
