ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES AND TRIALS OF CHURCH LEADERS IN RECENT YEARS
In light of the many upheavals in the Church in recent days and in those to come, I feel led to share a passage of scripture that has truly influenced me as a Shepherd. In fact this passage has directed my path for over thirty years. John 21:15-17 "When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep."
Jesus is asking Peter if he Agape's (to take pleasure in and esteem) Him, Peter responds that he Philos (dearly loves) Him. What does this matter? If you highly esteem and take pleasure in you're Master you will take pleasure in doing His will, serving Him. Shepherds /Pastors who Agape Jesus will care for His flock, His children just as if they were their own. True Shepherds who Agape Jesus will not compromise the flock to save face, twist scripture to fit an agenda, bring pleasure to themselves, abuse the flock by filling their bank accounts, nor seek honor for themselves. True shepherds will never allow Wolves among the flock nor defend them, they will rather at all costs protect the flock.
I am choosing to make this short because honestly we must each seek the Lord and the direction of the Holy Spirit to know for ourselves that the shepherd we are under is truly doing what God has instructed all Shepherds to do:Protect, instruct, love, and feed the sheep according to the will of his Master, not for his own gain, but for the Glory of God! Before I was a Pastor as a child I was a shepherd with my own flock, they loved me and I loved them, and I would never allow anything to harm them, for they were my responsibility..
