In Holy Spirit’s Garden of God’s Children, in the prayer garden,
We are offering memorial bricks to honor the memory of our children who are now with God.

There is no fee for the brick.

Today is the feast day of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. If you have wandered through Holy Spirit’s prayer garden you may have noticed a statue of this saint.

St. Kateri is also the patron saint of nature. In 1656, she was born in present-day New York state to a Mohawk chief and a mother from the Christian Algonquin tribe. Unfortunately, her parents died from smallpox. Tekakwitha recuperated but the disease left her scarred and with impaired eyesight. She was adopted by an aunt and spent her time in nature learning how to pick berries and plant corn. One day, missionaries came to her village to spread the word about Jesus. Inspired by hearing the stories of Jesus, Tekakwitha decided that she wanted to be baptized. She was baptized on Easter and was given the Christian name of Katherine or Kateri.

Kateri was joyful at her new status as a Christian but this did not endear her to her village. She did not wish to marry or to work in the fields on Sundays. The villagers did not understand her Christian faith and shunned her. Arrangements were made for Kateri to move to a Christian village in Canada where she could practice her faith in a community of fellow believers. She attended daily Mass there and prayed the rosary. She cared for the sick and taught children to pray. Kateri’s kindness and strong faith were well-regarded by her new village.

At the age of twenty-four, she died. It is said that minutes after she died, the smallpox scars on her face disappeared and she was radiant. This was interpreted as a miracle. In 2012, she was officially canonized and became our first Native American saint!
