Celebrating the Birthday of the of the Church!

This coming Sunday, May 24th is the Day of Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after the resurrection of Christ. Pentecost signifies the coming of the promised Holy Spirit to the disciples. On the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came down like tongues of flames, settling on the first apostles and allowing them to preach in different languages so everyone could understand God’s message. Because this day marks the beginning of public ministry for the disciples, Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the church.

Wear Red This Sunday!
It is customary to wear red on Pentecost to signify the gift of the Holy Spirit coming down to us. We invite everyone to come to worship this Sunday wearing red to symbolize the Holy Spirit being alive and with us.

We look forward to celebrating and worshipping with you!

Imelda is an amazing human! St Paul Lutheran has supported Imelda’s Hope as a part of our local benevolence ministry.

At 73 years old, Imelda Delchambre has been working for DCMC for 29 years. Her job is to reach out to people in our community struggling with poverty and language barriers that prevent them from getting the care they need and making sure they get it. Her interventions have saved countless lives.

While her work with DCMC accounts for over a third of her life and accomplishments, her story begins much earlier.

Learn more about why Imelda is so deservingly being inducted into the Door County Medical Center Women’s Legacy Gallery. https://www.dcmedical.org/news-and-events/honoring-imelda-delchambre

THE PERSPECTIVE OF LOVE

It has been said that, on our journey of discipleship, each of us receives new eyeglasses. These glasses have a prescription that filters out all the cobwebs and distractions, giving us the ability to see everything through love. If we wonder what a particular scripture passage means, we read and interpret it through love. If we wonder how to make a big decision, we discern it through love. If we wonder how to respond to a challenging person or situation, we consider responses through the perspective of love.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments,” Jesus says to his disciples (John 14:15). Loving Jesus means keeping his commandments, and keeping his commandments means loving: loving God, loving our neighbors as ourselves, and seeing our neighbors and ourselves in the same way our God of grace and forgiveness sees us.

We are not left on our own to maintain this perspective of love in all that we see, think, say, and do. Jesus promises that he and the Holy Spirit will not only be alongside us but will also live in us forever.

Devotional for the week of May 3, 2026
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

That’s what it’s all about! Jesus loves.

Jesus’ love is a constant in scripture. From his humble birth to his teachings, parables, healing miracles, feeding of the multitudes, power over creation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus loves.

Some people wanted the Messiah to take a much different approach. They thought their savior would come as a strong military leader, but Jesus did not start a violent overthrow of the Roman Empire. He just could not and would not do anything in conflict with love. He gave himself up and loved until the very end. In his last breath on the cross, he forgave everyone involved in crucifying him. This is the depth of the amazing love of God shown to us in Christ Jesus.

Stephen, “a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5), strove to live as Jesus lived and to love as Jesus loved. As he was being stoned to death, Stephen shouted, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (7:60).

Following Jesus was not easy for Stephen and other early Christians. It is not easy today. But in today’s gospel reading, Jesus assures his followers—then and now—of three things. First, the great doors to a place with God will be open to us, in a house with many rooms. Second, he is the way, truth, and life, and by knowing him, we come to know God the Father. Third, we can ask him for anything. These are promises of Jesus’ continuing care for us, for people of every time and place, and for all creation.
