Did you know…I didn’t until this post…

Beloveds, if you are able, I hope you will watch this Sunday as NASA launches their Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, designed to explore some of the universe’s biggest mysteries, including dark energy.

The telescope is named for lifelong and devoted Unitarian and later Unitarian Universalist, who was also NASA’s first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman. A longtime member of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation RRUUC in Bethesda, MD, Roman was as committed to serving her community, especially around issues of poverty and food insecurity, as she was to fearlessly advancing science in her role at NASA.

Cedarhurst once again participated in the Westminster Pride festival this past Saturday. It was hot but had a great time meeting others in our community.

This morning is our second summer lay-led service which continue through Labor Day weekend. These are more casual services with more time for discussion and are led by a member or friend of the congregation.

Today’s topic is US and UU History facilitated by Rich Dean
This year is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — a moment when the American experiment declared itself into being with the words:
“We hold these truths to be self‑evident, that all men
are created equal…”
For 250 years, America has been striving —imperfectly, unevenly, sometimes painfully — to live into those words.
And for most of those years, Unitarians and Universalists have been part of that struggle, shaping the nation’s conscience, expanding its moral imagination, and insisting that freedom
belongs to every person. We will explore that journey and the UU heroes who shaped our history.

On the Summer Solstice, we celebrate the longest day of the year—the moment when the sun offers its fullest light to the world.

As the Persian mystical poet Hafiz says in this beloved poem, the sun never asks for anything in return. It simply shines, warming the earth, nourishing life, and illuminating all it touches.

What might it mean to live with a love like that? A love rooted in generosity rather than transaction. A love that gives freely, creates abundance, and helps others grow.

May this Solstice invite us to receive the gifts of this season with gratitude—and to share our own light generously with the world.

This year, the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association is delighted to welcome the Rev. Sara LaWall as she offers this year's essay entitled, "Ministry in the Hot Holy Mess: Dispatches and Lifelines from the Frontlines of a Red State."

We send our unwavering support for Unitarian Universalists (UU) in uniform and our UU military chaplains. We recently learned the Department of Defense (DOD) has removed 180 separate religious affiliations from the US military’s list of religious affiliation codes. This eliminates the code for Unitarian Universalists, as well as Humanists, Atheists and Pagan traditions, and many others. Along with dozens of other religious traditions, UUs will be categorized broadly under “Other” in military’s religious affiliation codes.

Please note this decision does not directly impact the status of our UU military chaplains, who are authorized through a separate faith-based endorsement process with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). What it does mean is that Unitarian Universalist service members will not be able to select their specific religious identity in their personnel records. This may make it more difficult for our uniformed UUs to access the spiritual care that they need.

At this time, we are diligently working with our UUA counsel and partners in a variety of faith traditions to craft a strategic response that faithfully represents our values and demonstrates clear support for our UU service members and their families, as well as all those who are impacted by this DOD policy.

We will share more information when it is available. But today, we declare that no government action can erase our faith nor lessen the powerful and necessary grounding it provides for those who serve.
