We’re honored to welcome our final speaker for Family Bible Camp 2026 — Bishop Emeritus Mike Lowry, our evening preacher!✝️

John Michael (“Mike”) Lowry was raised in northern Illinois and graduated from Taipei American School in 1968 after his family moved to Taiwan. He attended Earlham College, where a conversion experience led him into ministry with the Society of Friends. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and Religion (1972), an M.Div. from Perkins School of Theology (1976), and a Doctor of Ministry from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (1985).
He married Jolynn Darland, and they have two children and several grandchildren. Lowry served in pastoral roles across Texas before becoming executive director of New Church Development and Transformation in the Southwest Texas Conference. In 2008, he was elected bishop and served 13½ years as Resident Bishop of the Central Texas Conference, while also holding leadership roles across the United Methodist Church and on numerous boards.
Throughout his ministry, he led church growth initiatives, capital campaigns, and received several awards for evangelism and community impact. After retiring in 2022, he became Bishop in Residence at United Theological Seminary and later joined the Global Methodist Church as Bishop Emeritus, serving on its Transitional Leadership Council. He remains passionate about encouraging faithfulness to Christ, often reminding others to “breathe deep—Jesus is still Lord.”

We’re thrilled to announce that Shirley Mullen will be serving as our Discipleship Hour speaker at Family Bible Camp this year!📖

Shirley Mullen served 15 years as President of Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y., retiring in May 2021. She has spent four decades in the work of faith based liberal arts education. Prior to becoming Houghton’s president, she served at various times as a classroom professor, chief academic officer and residence life director. She is an avid life-long learner with earned doctorates in both history and philosophy, focusing in her studies on the Enlightenment period and its complex impact on the Modern World, on liberal learning, and on our understanding of the human condition. As President Emerita, she continues to speak, write, and consult, as well as to encourage and develop the next generation of leaders through mentoring, board service, and project work with the Lilly Network of Church-Related Colleges and Universities. Over the years she has served as the board chair of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, Jericho Road Community Health Center, and Fuller Seminary. She continues to serve on the board of the National Association of Evangelicals and the First Amendment Partnership. Her latest book, Tried and True: The Countercultural Virtues of Christian Leadership, co-authored with Margaret Diddams, is forthcoming in August 2026 from IVP Academic. This new book reflects her continued engagement in the work of the “Courageous Middle” described in her 2024 book, Claiming the Courageous Middle: Daring to Live and Work Together for a More Hopeful Future [Baker Academic].

📣We’re excited to finally introduce our Bible Hour speaker for Family Bible Camp 2026—Dr. Andrew Walton!📣

Andrew is originally from Emmaus, PA, but has also lived in Massachusetts and now in New York. He grew up in a Christian household where the foundations of faith were laid early, but it was during his time at Houghton College that he first sensed a distinct calling to a life of teaching the Bible. There, he not only fell in love with Scripture, but also discovered a deep enduring desire to help others see the grand story of the Bible and to recognize that they are called to be a part of it. That calling was further affirmed and refined during his theological training at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he earned his master’s degree and at Harvard University, where he completed a PhD in Hebrew Bible. While pursuing his doctoral studies, Andrew served as a youth leader for twelve years and as an interim pastor for one year. He is now an ordained minister in the Wesleyan church. Andrew now serves as a Professor of Bible at Houghton University where he lives with his wife and four kids.

We’re looking forward to the way God will use Dr. Walton’s teaching during Bible Hour this summer!

We honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Dean Gregory “Greg” Van Dussen, who passed away peacefully at home in Batavia on February 8, 2026.

Born in Rochester on August 25, 1947, Greg devoted his life to ministry, education, music, and faithful service. A graduate of Spencerport High School, he went on to earn degrees from SUNY Brockport and Colgate Rochester Divinity School, later completing his Doctor of Ministry there as well. He served many years as a pastor in the United Methodist Church and shared his love of learning by teaching at SUNY Empire State University and at Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan University.

To us at Family Bible Camp, Greg will be especially remembered for the joy he and his wife Jackie brought each year. They cherished time spent in fellowship at the waterfront with friends, sharing stories, laughter, music, and faith. His gentle spirit, thoughtful conversations, and servant’s heart left a lasting mark on all who had the blessing of knowing him.

Greg was a gifted teacher, a devoted pastor, a talented musician, and a faithful follower of Christ. Even during his long battle with Parkinson’s disease, he remained steadfast in spirit and continued writing, with his final book going to press just this month.

We extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathy to his beloved wife of 55 years, Jackie, his sons, grandchildren, and family. We are grateful for the years Greg spent as part of the Family Bible Camp community. His faithful life will not be forgotten.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”❤️
