Why did Jesus walk on water?

Many know the miracle. Far fewer understand its purpose.

In John 6:16–21, Jesus comes to His disciples in the middle of a storm, walking on the Sea of Galilee. This miracle is not merely about power over nature. It is a revelation of who Jesus is. He walked on water to reveal Himself as the great “I AM.”

When darkness descends, danger develops, and fear dominates, Jesus comes to His people and says, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

Imagine having friends so determined to get you to Jesus that they didn’t care about destroying someone’s ceiling.

But here is the craziest part: When Jesus saw their faith, He didn’t just heal the man’s legs—He forgave his sins first. He cared about the man’s soul even more than his body.

Many followed Jesus for what He could give them but missed who He truly was.

In John 6:1–15, Jesus feeds the multitude and reveals Himself as the all-sufficient Savior. The miracle was about far more than bread and fish. It pointed to the only One who can truly satisfy the deepest need of man.

“The Trial of Unbelief”

In this passage, Jesus exposes the true nature of unbelief. The problem is not a lack of evidence, but a heart unwilling to come to Christ for life. Even those who searched the Scriptures and appeared outwardly religious still rejected the very Savior to whom the Scriptures pointed.
