PRELUDE

OUR APPROACH TO GOD

GREETING AND OPENING PRAYER

CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 33: 1-12
Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise God. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to the Lord on the ten-stringed lyre.
Sing to God a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the Lord is right and true; God is faithful in all the Lord does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of God’s unfailing love. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of God’s mouth.
God gathers the waters of the sea into jars the Lord puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere the Lord
For God spoke, and it came to be; God commanded, and it stood firm.
The Lord foils the plans of the nations; the Lord thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of God’s heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people the Lord chose for an inheritance.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Jesus, we bow in wonder at the expanse of your embrace, the breadth of your inclusion and the surprise of your grace. You seek and seek and seek, including these we write off as beyond hope, the outcasts, the public sinners, the self-serving, and those who collaborate with evil and oppression. Why are we surprised? You desire mercy not sacrifice. You are the great Healer and Physician coming to those most in need of healing. Forgive us for forgetting who you are. Forgive us for forgetting our own sin and isolation and collaboration. Forgive us for judging, for our self-righteousness, for limiting you when we are desperately in need of you. We are “Those in need” as well. Create in us clean hearts and renew your Holy spirit within us. Amen

KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ, have mercy upon us;
Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life.

THE WORD OF GOD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

SCRIPTURE (Hymn: Breathe on me Breathe of God #161)

Sing: Verse 1
1st Reading: Genesis 12:1-9
12 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot and all the possessions that they had gathered and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran, and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord. 9 And Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb.

Sing: Verse 2
2nd Reading: Romans 4:13-25
13 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
16 For this reason the promise depends on faith, in order that it may rest on grace, so that it may be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (who is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”), in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So shall your descendants be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), and the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 22 Therefore “it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 23 Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were written not for his sake alone 24 but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was handed over for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

Sing: Verse 3
*3rd Reading: Matthew 9: 9-13 & 18-26 (Pastor will Read)
9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax-collection station, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.
10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with Jesus and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

18 While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. 20 Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21 for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” 22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that moment. 23 When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24 he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. 26 And the report of this spread through all of that district.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FROM THE BELHAR CONFESSION
We believe
that God has entrusted the church with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ, that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that the church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker, that the church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells
that God’s lifegiving Word and Spirit has conquered the powers of sin and death, and therefore also of irreconciliation and hatred, bitterness and enmity, that God’s lifegiving Word and Spirit will enable the church to live in a new obedience which can open new possibilities of life for society and the world
that the credibility of this message is seriously affected and its beneficial work obstructed when it is proclaimed in a land which professes to be Christian, but in which the enforced separation of people on a racial basis promotes and perpetuates alienation, hatred and enmity;
that any teaching which attempts to legitimate such forced separation by appeal to the gospel and is not prepared to venture on the road of obedience and reconciliation, but rather, out of prejudice, fear, selfishness and unbelief, denies in advance the reconciling power of the gospel, must be considered ideology and false doctrine.

Therefore, we reject any doctrine
which, in such a situation, sanctions in the name of the gospel or of the will of God the forced separation of people on the grounds of race and color (or social status) and thereby in advance obstructs and weakens the ministry and experience of reconciliation in Christ.

OUR APPROACH TO GOD

OPENING PRAYER

CALL TO WORSHIP
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

CHILDRENS MESSAGE

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Wondrous God, we confess that at times our doubts and fears override our hope and faith. Forgive us when we lose sight of the joy of Your love and instead fall into hopelessness. We offer up to you our sins of omission – for all that we have left undone, knowing you have called us to serve you by loving others and sharing the good news of your love for all your creation.
Lord Jesus, we acknowledge that your sacrifice cleanses us whiter than snow, renewing us to live a better life. In this time of silent communion with our God, we confess the wrongs we have committed.
Almighty God, help us to remember the promise of new life here and now, not just the hope of resurrection for the future. Father, we give thanks for Your Son, Jesus, who continues to offer us new life through the Holy Spirit, who continues to turn us around and guide us on the path to faith and trust.
Forgive us, restore us and renew us. In the name of our risen Savior, Jesus the Christ, we pray. Amen.

KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ, have mercy upon us;
Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me. —Jeremiah 33:8
As the prophets proclaimed and Jesus fulfilled, our sins have been washed clean by the blood of our Savior. Believe this good news and go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God!

THE LAW OF GOD
He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? —Micah 6:8

*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God, our Father, you made us, you love us, and you invite us to be in community with you. Jesus, you rescued us, you made us holy, and you enabled us to be in community.
Holy Spirit, you inspired these words of Scripture, you guide the words of the message, and you transform us.
Triune God, thank you for your Word to us. May it deepen our faith, comfort us, and challenge us so that we may grow in our love for you and each other. In the name of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Genesis 1:1-2:4a, Matthew 28:16-20

Genesis 1:1-2:4a
When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."
So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.
God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
And God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.
God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it." And it was so.
The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years,
and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth." And it was so.
God made the two great lights--the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night--and the stars.
God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth,
to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky."
So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good.
God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."
And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind." And it was so.
God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind and the cattle of every kind and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, "Let us make humans in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over the cattle and over all the wild animals of the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."
So God created humans in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."
God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.
And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude.
On the sixth day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.
So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.
When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted.
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

*DEDICATION OF GIFTS

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Heidelberg Catechism
Q. What do you believe when you say, “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth”?
A. That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth and everything in them, who still upholds and rules them by his eternal counsel and providence, is my God and Father because of Christ the Son.
I trust God so much that I do not doubt he will provide whatever I need for body and soul, and will turn to my good whatever adversity he sends upon me in this sad world.
God is able to do this because he is almighty God,6 and desires to do this because he is a faithful Father.
Q. How does the knowledge of God’s creation and providence help us?
A. We can be patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that nothing in creation will separate us from his love. For all creatures are so completely in God’s hand that without his will they can neither move nor be moved.

CHILDRENS MESSAGE

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We confess, our God, even as believers, to disbelieving the fullness of your good news. We affirm the holiness of your way, but don’t fully lean into the wholeness of it. We celebrate your story, but don’t rely on it enough to risk living it. We say our prayers, but count our money. We know the stories and we sing the hymns, but we won’t risk trusting the implications of those stories and songs at the workplace or at the gym or at home. Blow away our half-heartedness, God. Breathe into us and fill our hearts with hope and possibility and commitment. We can’t do it breathing for ourselves. Breathe in us, we pray. Amen.
(Silent contemplation.)

KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ, have mercy upon us;
Lord, have mercy upon us.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
God, our light and our salvation does not forsake us or leave us with our sin. Brothers and sisters in Christ we are forgiven and offered the gift of healing repentance.
Response: THANKS BE TO GOD. AMEN.

THE LAW OF GOD
As Paul wrote to the Ephesian Christians: be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Eph 4:32-5:2

*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Holy God, enlighten us by your Holy Spirit, and reveal yourself to us,
that we may hear your word and proclaim your good news in the world. Amen.

SCRIPTURE
Old Testament: Genesis 11:1-9
11Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
5The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. 6And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth

New Testament: Acts 2:1-21
2When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17“In the last days it will be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit;
and they shall prophesy.
19And I will show portents in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and smoky mist.
20The sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

OUR RESPONSE TO GOD

OFFERTORY
*DOXOLOGY
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen

*DEDICATION OF GIFTS
As a community of faithful people, you have bestowed on us unimaginable riches and made us stewards of it all. You have placed your trust in us, O Lord of heaven and earth, and for this we are grateful. Help us manage this sacred trust; remind us that all creation belongs to you, and that you have offered it to us to use for a while. As we return today a portion of what is yours, bless both those who give and those who receive in Jesus’ name. Amen.
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, and He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

God Be with You ‘Til We Meet Again
( #523 v.1&2 and chorus)

God be with you ‘til we meet again
By His counsel’s guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you
God be with you ‘til we meet again.

God be with you ‘til we meet again
‘Neath His wings protecting hide you
Daily manna still provide you
God be with you ‘til we meet again!

‘Til we meet, ‘til we meet
‘til we meet at Jesus’ feet
‘Til we meet, ‘til we meet
God be with you ‘til we meet again!
