1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 – Prove all things; hold fast that which is good Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Paul viewed the local church as a family. Each member is born again by personal, saving faith in Jesus Christ. We possess God’s nature. And we ought to live like it!
Every child of God needs the church family if we expect to grow. The Lord uses the ministry of the local church to help all believers develop our talents and gifts. It is through the local church that we are able to serve the Lord as He has commanded and designed.
Paul challenged the Thessalonians to test and examine everything that they faced or dealt with. Their lives were to be lived in light of the holiness and righteous standard of the Lord.
They were to embrace what was good. And they were to refrain from anything sinful.
Paul again urged the Thessalonians to remain steadfast and committed to the things of the Lord.
Now let’s be very honest right here. A Christian can no more avoid all evil than a boat can avoid all water. But we can make sure that our ‘boat’ does not have any leaks! Evil should never be allowed into our hearts.
Remember, it is not a sin to be tempted. But it is a sin to yield to that temptation. So do not yield! Abstain!!
Our perseverance must include the commitment to test all things. Embrace what is good. Avoid anything sinful.
We need this clear reminder. We must guard our witness.
It is wrong to think that we can separate our spiritual lives from everything else, obeying God and living for Him only one day each week. God must control all of us, not just some 'religious' part, every day that we live.
We must be careful how we present ourselves, so that we are seen in a positive way that exalts our Lord and points others to Jesus.
We are not our own! We have an obligation to live upright lives that are above reproach!!

1 Thessalonians 2:4 – But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

The gospel is a treasure the Lord has entrusted to us.
Certainly, we are responsible for protecting the gospel. But we must also share the gospel, or else we are protecting it in vain.
1. Paul was favored. The word “allowed” means ‘to test, examine, prove, and deem worthy.’ Paul had not chosen the ministry. Jesus Christ called him. Paul was placed in ministry.
2. Paul was faithful. Paul was careful not to get entangled with the bo***ge of the legalistic Jews or with the heresy of the false doctrines of the world. Again, Paul was faithful to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ!
There is clearly a growing trend of deviating away from the gospel today, even among many churches. But hear me clearly!
We have been called to preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the only message that can change people’s hearts.
We must be faithful to proclaim Christ and him crucified. Amen?!!
3. Paul was focused. Paul was not really concerned about what men thought as long as the Lord was pleased with him.
We certainly must ever be mindful of our witness and of our testimony. But our actions cannot be dictated by the desire to please men. The Lord knows our motives, ok?! He knows our hearts.
Being determined to please the Lord may not gain us popularity among people in the world. In fact, they may very likely label us as old fashioned, or narrow minded, or even fanatical.
That is alright with me! I am not interested in the approval or the acceptance of the world but of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!!
Paul's enemies in Thessalonica accused him of being a cheap peddler of this new message. They said that his only motive was to make money.
In describing himself and his ministry, Paul answered these critics. And Paul's readers knew that he told the truth! Paul appealed to the witness of the Lord and to their own personal witness.
Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to live in ways that would bring joy to the Lord. This is a good example for us to follow.
What do people think of Jesus Christ when they examine our lives? Even more important! What does the Lord think about how you and I live from day to day?!!

Matthew 5:7 – Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

The beatitudes are character traits. They help to clearly identify true believers in Jesus Christ.
Jesus started each beatitude with the word “blessed.” This has the idea of ‘spiritual joy and satisfaction that lasts and stays regardless of conditions; that carries us through pain and sorrow, loss and grief.’
Jesus reveals the true presence and assurance of blessing to those who follow Him.
Mercy is genuine concern for others. Mercy offers help to those who hurt, who suffer hardship and adversity.
Mercy means more than only sympathizing or feeling sorry for someone in their time of trouble. Mercy involves a deliberate identification with that person. We see things as they see them. We feel things as they feel them.
Those who extend mercy give encouragement because we identify with the sorrowing. Rather than watching from a distance or keeping the needy safely at arm’s length, those with the character trait of mercy get involved.
We offer help that eases some of the pain. We offer more than religious words. Actions!
And what do we get in return? Jesus says: “they shall obtain mercy.”
Jesus promises that those who reach out and demonstrate mercy will receive mercy - both from other people and from the Lord Himself.
We might paraphrase this character trait this way:
“Joy filled are those who identify with and assist others in need, who see with their eyes and think with their thoughts and feel with their feelings. Those who do that will find that others do the same for them when they have needs.”
After all, that is exactly what Jesus did! Jesus saw life through human eyes. He felt the sting of pain. He identified with our human needs. Jesus understands.
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”(Hb4:14-16). Be merciful!!

1 Corinthians 1:3 – Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

To receive God's grace is to know God's peace. And you can mark it down: God’s peace is a spiritual gift to everyone who believes in Jesus for salvation. God alone can "bless his people with peace"(Ps29:11) as the psalmist said.
In ancient Israel, worship services ended with this benediction in Numbers 6:
“The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace”(Nu6:24-26).
This ancient blessing conveys the hope that God would (1) bless and protect, (2) be gracious, and (3) give peace.
When we ask God to bless others, or you and me for that matter!, we are asking God to do these things. Included in the list is peace.
The gospel of salvation is a gospel of peace. The angels said at the birth of Jesus: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”(Lk2:14).
God’s peace is directly related to Jesus Christ. Jesus promised us “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”(Jn14:27).
What is the legacy of peace that Jesus’ promised? First, this is a spiritual peace.
When we believe in Jesus Christ and are saved, God’s permanent, everlasting peace is ours!
The second feature of the peace that Jesus promised is an inward contentment.
This peace is not based on favorable conditions or on enjoying good and happy circumstances. Jesus promised ‘trouble’ in the world but ‘peace’ with Him.
You see, and please get this!, Jesus offers peace not based on the changing circumstances of our lives but on our unchanging relationship with God that is ours through personal, saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Fear, uncertainty, doubt, and a multitude of other forces are at war within us. God’s peace conquers these hostile forces and offers us comfort in place of this conflict.
God’s peace will be sufficient all the way into eternity!
