Hebrews 7:27 – Who (Jesus) needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
On the annual Day of Atonement, the high priest first had to offer a sacrifice for himself and for all of the other priests. This came first before he could offer the sacrifice for all the people of the nation of Israel.
There were also daily sacrifices, one each morning and once each afternoon, offered as a part of the temple worship ritual for the sins of the people. And, if an individual sinned, even a priest!, he had to bring a sacrifice for his own cleaning.
But Jesus Christ offered just one sacrifice, not for His sins, but for ours! And that sacrifice settled the matter forever!!
On Memorial Day, we honor the sacrifice of brave men and women. Why would they pay such a valuable price?
Because they were purchasing something far more valuable than life itself - freedom!
That is what sacrifice does. It gives up something valuable to gain something even more valuable.
In baseball, a batter will often bunt or try to intentionally hit a fly ball deep to the outfield to advance a runner already on base.
The player’s appearance at the plate goes down in the record books as a ‘sacrifice.’ He was more productive in giving up his chance to run the bases because he helped the team have a chance to score a run and win the game.
On Memorial Day, we remember those who gave their lives to purchase our freedom!
And never forget, Jesus Christ provided for all mankind the greatest sacrifice ever made!
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”(Ro5:8).
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”( Jn3:16).
Thank you, Lord, for salvation!!
