Sermon Outline:
Jonah: The Depth of God’s Grace
God’s Relentless Pursuit
Jonah 1:4-16 (NLT)
February 21 & 22, 2026

1. Peter Pan takes a morning stroll.

2. Running from God has a way of making things worse in life - and not just for us, but for those around us. Literally we endanger those around us when we run from God.

3. God can be both the initiator of the storm, and He can take the storms the enemy caused and use them for His purposes. He will use whatever means are necessary to intervene in the life of his children - both to bring us back to Him and to birth a ministry call in a person’s life.

4. “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.” - from the Talmud, Sanhedrin 4:5

5. When we run from God, we’re not only missing out on God’s blessing in our life, but we’re missing out on having an impact for the Kingdom of God - an impact that resonates beyond our life and into eternity.

This week is about Simplifying. The sermon notes for this week are posted below.

Scripture:
Matthew 10:39 & Philippians 3:8-14

1. Inward Simplifying

A. We don't have to feel frustrated and exhausted all the time. It IS possible to discover what the Quaker author, Thomas Kelly, describes as the “center of unhurried peace.”

B. Simplicity as a Christian involves many paradoxes:
1. Simplicity is both a grace and a discipline
2. Simplicity is both easy and difficult
3. The balance between inner and outer simplicity
4. Asceticism vs materialism

C. A look at how some Christians throughout history have chosen to simplify their lives
1. First century Christians
2. The Birth of Monasticism (the 3rd and 4th centuries)
3. St. Francis of Assisi

D. One of the central paradoxes of the Christian life is this: True self-fulfillment comes only through self-denial.

2. Outward Simplifying (10 tips from Richard Foster's "Celebration of Discipline")

A. Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status.
B. Reject anything that is producing an addiction in you.
C. Develop a habit of giving things away.
D. Refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry.
E. Learn to enjoy things without owning them.
F. Develop a greater appreciation for creation.
G. Look with a healthy skepticism at all "buy now, pay later" schemes.
H. Obey Jesus' instruction about plain, honest speech.
I. Reject anything that breeds the oppression of others.
J. Shun anything that distracts you from seeking first the Kingdom of God.
