Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Hildegard, who is very special to the Sisters of St. Benedict. St. Hildegard of Bingen, a German abbess, visionary mystic, and composer, was born in 1098 in Germany of noble parents. Educated at a Benedictine cloister, she began wearing the Benedictine habit and pursuing a religious life at the age of 15. From a young age, she experienced visions, at least 26 which were confirmed and recorded. After serving as prioress, she left to start a new convent at Rupertsberg. In addition to recording her visions, she was a prolific poet and composer, setting 77 of her lyric poems to music. Keenly interested in science, she wrote works on medicine and natural history, and traveled widely throughout Germany, sharing her visions and insights. She died at the age of 81, and was formally canonized in 2012, a patron saint of musicians and writers. She was also named a doctor of the church, one of only four women to have this distinction. Many of her writings remain in print, and her music is still recorded today.

On Sunday morning, September 4, Katie Cummings, a Kansas native transplanted to Wisconsin, and Callie Nowlin from Texas, made their Entrance into Postulancy at Monastery Immaculate Conception, the first step toward becoming a Sister of St. Benedict of Ferdinand. In a ceremony attended by the community, the two were given postulant medals and, in the tradition of “Ora et Labora” (prayer and work), morning and evening prayer books and aprons handmade by Sister Charlene Wheeless. They were led in by Sister Jill Reuber, our Director of Vocations, after which Formation Director Sister Louise Laroche stepped forward, symbolizing the transition from initial discernment to initial formation.

Have you ever wanted to “pray the Scriptures”? Sister Jill Marie Reuber invites you to join her on Zoom on the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. EST and the fourth Sunday of every month at 6 p.m. EST for Group Lectio, starting September 14.

You’ll have the opportunity to “pray Lectio” with Sister Jill, as practiced by the Sisters of St. Benedict, focusing on the Gospel from the upcoming Sunday. You’ll be able to share prayer, contemplation and whatever you feel comfortable sharing.

This is an informal, relaxed setting, and you don’t need to have any experience at all with praying Lectio...simply a desire to learn this timeless practice. Just send an email to Sister Jill at [email protected], and she’ll send you the Zoom link. We hope you can join her!
