I shared this with our precious mothers today.
To the Dear Mothers in this room,
I praise the Lord for you and for God’s design of motherhood! How precious is the gift of a mother. One who by God’s design feeds us, nurtures us, comforts us, instructs us, chastens us, and loves us in a way that exemplifies our God. You are a cherished treasure to your family. You are a blessing to those whom God has entrusted to care. You have the power to affect the spiritual fragrance of your home with love, beauty, and peace. You are uniquely made to complement the role of the father and bring a gentleness that balances the home.
God uses the analogy of a mother to illustrate the divine comfort He brings to His people in Isa 66:13: "As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem."
He emphasizes the necessity of a mother’s teaching to complement the instruction of the father: Proverbs 1:8
"Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching."
Proverbs 6:20
"My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching."
So valuable is a mother’s teaching, that King Lemuel declares the profound role of his mother in instructing him, warning him, and shaping his righteous reign:
Proverbs 31:1
"The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him."
So valuable is a mother’s spiritual influence that Paul acknowledges the central role of Timothy’s mother and grandmother in his spiritual formation:
2 Timothy 1:5
"I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well."
So valuable and precious is a mother’s role in the family, that God describes her as a “keeper of the home” or “working at home” in Titus 2:4-5.
"…and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled."
A mother is such a treasure in the home, that the fruit of her labors, and the impact of her life on her home is aptly described in Proverbs 31:26-28:
"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
Children, You will not comprehend or truly appreciate the treasure your mother is until later in your life, when you begin to realize the sacrifices made on your behalf, the foundation you have received in the Lord, the love displayed to you every day in the unheralded tasks, duties, and responsibilities that she carried, and the balance of kindness and firmness that is a rich reflection of the mercy and severity of our God. Don’t wait to notice the profound gift that she is. Don’t let time alone teach you of the blessed treasure of your mother. Don’t just allow your own entrance into parenting to open your eyes to the manifold blessings bestowed upon you through your mother. Take notice now. Consider now her ways and observe her quietly consistent duties that keep your lives in order. Think now of the many tasks she carries in a single day that so often go unnoticed. Listen well to the words of encouragement and reproof. See how her love extends to you in a thousand ways, most often without consideration or acknowledgment. Don’t waste your opportunities to appreciate your mothers, notice God’s grace to you through her, and return the blessings back to her that remind her of the fruit of her labors.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”!
