Today we remember and celebrate Juneteenth, the day when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
As followers of Jesus, we recognize that freedom is at the heart of God’s story. We celebrate the dignity and worth of every person because every person is made in the image of God. We also acknowledge that the journey toward justice, reconciliation, and flourishing for all people is an ongoing work that requires humility, compassion, and love.
Today we give thanks for those who persevered in hope, honor the significance of this day in our nation’s history, and pray that we would continue to be a people who reflect the heart of Christ in how we love and serve one another.
