On Sunday, Brother Austin Jones preached on the Just Judge. While some may view God as being a harsh, cruel judge, it is written of God in Deuteronomy 32:4: “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he". Thus, we can see that God is a perfect and upright judge who values justice. But what exactly is justice? Justice is getting what you deserve.

What do we deserve?
Based on Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23, we all deserve death and condemnation because of the sins we have committed. Because God is a perfect judge, He cannot ignore our sins.

However, He shows His infinite mercy with His salvation plan, and He shows His grace by allowing us to live with Him in Heaven for eternity. We can see God’s mercy and grace through how Jesus forgives Peter and gives him responsibilities within the church even after he denied Him three times (John 21:15-19). We do not deserve eternal life, but Christ gives us hope for this through his sacrifice and baptism.

This week, let’s dwell on Matthew 6:14-15: “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Since God has shown His mercy and grace for all through His Son Jesus Christ, how can we show mercy and grace to others as we are called to do?

Have your parents ever told you that you represent your family every time you go out into the world? Have you ever felt pressure to live up to your family name?

This Sunday, Brother Jadon Howard asked us to think of how the disciples felt when they were given The Great Commission, as written in Matthew 28:16-20.

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV):
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

While we might feel nervous about representing our earthly families, the disciples must have felt the immense pressure and gravity of having to go out into the world and represent Jesus. They may have felt nervous about the authorities that could punish them severely, or they might have felt unworthy to spread the Gospel. Similarly, we may also feel inadequate about representing the church. Since our day-to-day interactions may be the only time people in our lives see the light of Jesus, we realize the importance of our actions and words, and that they are subject to scrutiny. However, anytime we think that we’re not enough or feel pressure to represent the church, remember Jesus’ beautiful words that comforted the apostles and still hold true for us today: “...And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

This past weekend we were blessed to have brother Jonathan Edwards travel in from Texas to uplift our congregation throughout a three day Gospel Meeting. Throughout the weekend we were uplifted and challenged with moving lessons as well as encouraged through fellowship. We thank everyone who was able to attend and make this weekend special. We look forward to doing it again next year!

Guest speaker Austin Linn gave a lesson on common myths about the Church of Christ this past Sunday. Below are some of the myths he addressed.

Myth #1: The church of Christ doesn't believe in or follow the Old Testament.

As outlined in Jeremiah 31:31-34, Jesus and the New Testament brings forth a new covenant with the death of Jesus, fulfilling the promises of the Old Testament. While the New Testament teaches we are no longer under the laws of the Old Testament (Colossians 2:14), we do learn from what is written in the Old Testament.

Myth #2: The church of Christ doesn't believe in grace, since they don't think that just believing in Jesus is enough to be saved.

Grace is receiving something you do not deserve. While faith allows one to receive grace, true faith requires submission to God's will, demonstrated by works of obedience. In fact, faith without these works is considered to be dead faith (James 2:14-26).

Myth #3: The church of Christ doesn't like music because they do not allow instruments.

In the Old Testament, music related to worship was accompanied by instruments, but we are no longer under the Old Testament laws. Instrumental music is not found in the worship of the New Testament church described in the Bible, and is not seen in history until centuries after the establishment of the church. Acapella (singing without instrumental accompaniment) is the form of music described in Colossians 3:16.

Myth #4: The church of Christ believes women are inferior.

We believe in Paul's words found in Galatians 3:28, which says, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus." God has granted men and women equality in the blessings of salvation found in Christ; however, he has also outlined specific roles for men and women. 1 Corinthians 11:3-12 shows man is the head of woman, just as God is the head of Christ, who willingly submitted to God. We believe these truths, and while they do not align with our current culture, God is above our culture and our human understanding.

What an awesome weekend of praise, worship, and fellowship.

Throughout the weekend Kevin Fox brought to life the meaning of "I Will Rise!" As sung in our theme song.

When Bartimaeus was called by Jesus, he sprang up at the opportunity and followed him. We can have confidence when Jesus asks "what can I do for you?" that he will empower us to Rise up and follow him.

With Jesus last words on the cross - he declared "It is finished" - Triumphantly stating that he had completed & paid in full the account he had come to fulfill and that action is still active for us to Rise in confidence - knowing we can look forward in hope and not backwards in guilt on our walk with Christ.

When Jesus rose and the tomb was left empty - we were shown that even with all the power of Satan working against him, there was more for us than against us. In the same way that Elisha was able to see the true power of God surrounding his enemies, through Christ we can boldly Rise knowing that the power of God will stand behind us against evil.

Thank you to all who supported our meeting over the weekend. Thank you to the young people who made our congregation home temporarily to sing, learn, worship, and be filled with joy. We can't wait to do it again!

"I will Rise in rejoicing; I will Rise and repent because he called my name! I will Rise from the water and be cleansed from within; O when He calls for me, I will Rise!"
