Guest speaker Austin Linn gave a lesson on common myths about the Church of Christ this past Sunday. Below are some of the myths he addressed.
Myth #1: The church of Christ doesn't believe in or follow the Old Testament.
As outlined in Jeremiah 31:31-34, Jesus and the New Testament brings forth a new covenant with the death of Jesus, fulfilling the promises of the Old Testament. While the New Testament teaches we are no longer under the laws of the Old Testament (Colossians 2:14), we do learn from what is written in the Old Testament.
Myth #2: The church of Christ doesn't believe in grace, since they don't think that just believing in Jesus is enough to be saved.
Grace is receiving something you do not deserve. While faith allows one to receive grace, true faith requires submission to God's will, demonstrated by works of obedience. In fact, faith without these works is considered to be dead faith (James 2:14-26).
Myth #3: The church of Christ doesn't like music because they do not allow instruments.
In the Old Testament, music related to worship was accompanied by instruments, but we are no longer under the Old Testament laws. Instrumental music is not found in the worship of the New Testament church described in the Bible, and is not seen in history until centuries after the establishment of the church. Acapella (singing without instrumental accompaniment) is the form of music described in Colossians 3:16.
Myth #4: The church of Christ believes women are inferior.
We believe in Paul's words found in Galatians 3:28, which says, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus." God has granted men and women equality in the blessings of salvation found in Christ; however, he has also outlined specific roles for men and women. 1 Corinthians 11:3-12 shows man is the head of woman, just as God is the head of Christ, who willingly submitted to God. We believe these truths, and while they do not align with our current culture, God is above our culture and our human understanding.
