Dear People, As we go deeper into this time of pause, we see that this period of isolation is going to last for many months. We also realize that the world will not return to how it was before. This is a good time to assess as to how our circle can be changed to better serve our needs. We can't even begin to plan for when our next sabbat or esbat could be safely held. Neither Hazel or I would want to shift functions to being solely on line. Ours is a nature-based practice, which involves being outdoors or at least in a primal environment for most all rituals. The time will come when we'll be able to engage in face to face fellowship again, Goddess willing. This is when I would like to explain what our problems were before the plague began, and let's see if we can throw out ideas how to improve future gatherings.
We were a tightly knit closed coven for many years. None of us were perfect, but we were truly devoted to each other. A coven consists of people joined in a covenant, we pledge to help and support each other if possible. Unfortunately we lost members at a rapid pace to health problems, divorce, moving far away, and political differences. We lost a charismatic HPS, and then found ourselves with half the circle leaving to hive off with the new HPS. Here are some of the problems we have encountered. With open circles people are far less committed to attending circles on a regular basis. We found it very difficult to be the hosts for all sabbats, especially if we don't know how many or who is going to attend. My wife Hazel takes being the host for a gathering very seriously, and she has found it very stressful. Also we found it difficult to give an equal amount of attention to all participants. Some people have very big egos and like to dominate conversations. Without training people really can't understand the rituals, and miss out on what an incredible experience they can be. Lack of willingness to learn and study as to what we are all about is a problem. Another difficulty I've encountered is people not showing up for initial meetings or interviews. That has always been a drain on the leadership of a circle. All newbies please be polite, and at least call me in advance if you can't make a scheduled meeting. One big stress factor that may be rectified by this fall is the weather interfering with outdoor ritual. Hazel and I hope to have a ritual cabin finished this year. At present we have great outdoor spaces, but our indoor space is very limited. Please be aware that it can be very hard to be involved in a Goddess based religion, if one is male. I'm very aware of women having had terrible experiences with sexual harassment and unwanted advances at times in their lives. All I can do is pledge to work hard that all are protected from such experiences. I would like to hear more from people, as to how they feel and what they would like to see happen with the circle. If you would like me to repost your messages on the home page, let me know and I will do so. It will be great to get more feedback and ideas from people. Wishing that everybody stays safe. Bright Blessings, Ralph
