Dear People, As we go deeper into this time of pause, we see that this period of isolation is going to last for many months. We also realize that the world will not return to how it was before. This is a good time to assess as to how our circle can be changed to better serve our needs. We can't even begin to plan for when our next sabbat or esbat could be safely held. Neither Hazel or I would want to shift functions to being solely on line. Ours is a nature-based practice, which involves being outdoors or at least in a primal environment for most all rituals. The time will come when we'll be able to engage in face to face fellowship again, Goddess willing. This is when I would like to explain what our problems were before the plague began, and let's see if we can throw out ideas how to improve future gatherings.

We were a tightly knit closed coven for many years. None of us were perfect, but we were truly devoted to each other. A coven consists of people joined in a covenant, we pledge to help and support each other if possible. Unfortunately we lost members at a rapid pace to health problems, divorce, moving far away, and political differences. We lost a charismatic HPS, and then found ourselves with half the circle leaving to hive off with the new HPS. Here are some of the problems we have encountered. With open circles people are far less committed to attending circles on a regular basis. We found it very difficult to be the hosts for all sabbats, especially if we don't know how many or who is going to attend. My wife Hazel takes being the host for a gathering very seriously, and she has found it very stressful. Also we found it difficult to give an equal amount of attention to all participants. Some people have very big egos and like to dominate conversations. Without training people really can't understand the rituals, and miss out on what an incredible experience they can be. Lack of willingness to learn and study as to what we are all about is a problem. Another difficulty I've encountered is people not showing up for initial meetings or interviews. That has always been a drain on the leadership of a circle. All newbies please be polite, and at least call me in advance if you can't make a scheduled meeting. One big stress factor that may be rectified by this fall is the weather interfering with outdoor ritual. Hazel and I hope to have a ritual cabin finished this year. At present we have great outdoor spaces, but our indoor space is very limited. Please be aware that it can be very hard to be involved in a Goddess based religion, if one is male. I'm very aware of women having had terrible experiences with sexual harassment and unwanted advances at times in their lives. All I can do is pledge to work hard that all are protected from such experiences. I would like to hear more from people, as to how they feel and what they would like to see happen with the circle. If you would like me to repost your messages on the home page, let me know and I will do so. It will be great to get more feedback and ideas from people. Wishing that everybody stays safe. Bright Blessings, Ralph

I regret to say that The Fayetteville Goddess Festival has been cancelled due to the pandemic. Some aspects of the festival may be happening online, but I can't convey the details at this time. This is a big disappointment for those of us who have put so much work into it, but it was definitely the right decision. I encourage everybody to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly, avoid large groups of people, practice your protective magic, and keep and eye on your neighbors in case they need help. Blessings, Ralph

At times I feel the need to differentiate the difference between a vision and a hallucination; a delusion and a belief based on your spiritual, religious mythos. If your see and hear something, that you feel affects you in a positive fashion, feel free to regard it as a vision. Do not expect others to see it the same way. Do not expect others to attach the same credence and importance to it that you do. When sharing your visions and beliefs with others, be aware that you are different, but not necessarily special. I've found a vivid imagination is very useful in fostering creativity and spiritual development. But it's important to be aware of limits.

The element of fire is the most transformative of all the elements. It can be very powerful, transforming the countryside in a path of wildfire destruction. It is also very comforting. Think how a glowing campfire can reassure the lone hiker deep in the wilderness as the sky darkens and the shadows grow. I remember Mowgli in the Jungle Book announcing he'd obtained the "red flower" of the humans, and how empowered he'd felt. What I appreciate the most about a bonfire at this time of year, is that it can transform a cold, wet, dreary evening into a time of warmth and fellowship, albeit the smoke can be a nuisance. All through the summer sabbats, we try to keep the flames as small as possible. Who needs a roaring inferno when the air temp is in the nineties. But by the time of Samhain one can really appreciate the warmth of the flames and the glow of faces in the firelight. Blessed be, Ralph

As the time of Samhain approaches, I find myself experiencing a mixture of longing and apprehension. The summer heat has finally relented and my gardens of flowers and vegetables are as bountiful as ever. On most days we're treated to the most pleasant weather of the year. Along with this though is the knowledge, that the wheel of the year is readying for a major change in seasons. To the ancient Celts Samhain was the beginning of winter. It was as time of harvest and butchering as the flocks and herds were thinned for winter. I always find myself wondering how I'll be able to deal with the changes of the coming season. Of course I'll dress warmly, keep the fire going, and will still have some vegetables coming in until the very worst of freezes. But deep down I need some reassurance. That is the purpose of the Samhain sabbat; to remind us that death and change are natural and we can be adept at all the changes coming. Sometimes we need to come together and share in ritual, so that our subconscious can be reassured of the beauty and wonder of change. Bright Blessings, Ralph

I regret to inform everybody, that due to an unforeseen surgery, my wife had to schedule a few days before the sabbath, we aren't going to be able to host the Imbolc ritual. The next sabbat will be Ostara on March 23rd. We hope you'll be able to be with us then.

Soon our circle will be celebrating the last sabbath of the wheel of the year, Samhain. As the old year retires and the new year begins, the veil between the worlds is thinnest. We choose this time to pay homage to the memory and spirit and of those we've known, who have crossed over to the other side. We stand before the circle holding our lit jack-o-lantern and tell who our love ones are and why their spirit means so much to us still. This is followed by circling the fire three times chanting how they will not be forgotten. May the spirit of our beloved departed be with us always in our hearts.

I came across this quote in The Sun magazine, "Those who believe religion and politics aren't connected don't understand either." Mohandas K. Gandhi

There is so much resistance among many of my peers to having anything resembling a religious identity. I feel more comfortable with a religious identity than without. But if I identify as Wiccan, that doesn't mean I fail to respect and accept aspects and elements of other religions. Nor do I feel that having any religious identity automatically makes you a better person. Religion is a framework allowing me to share my spiritual side with others. I engage in my religious studies and practices because I find them to be enjoyable, not because there is a sense of duty to higher powers involved. Blessed be, Ralph

We celebrated the Litha sabbat on the 23rd on June. The weather Gods cooperated nicely, providing us with a pleasant evening. For part of the observance we experimented with crystals and stones. It was interesting to discover how different people are able to incorporate crystals into their spiritual lives. Some could feel various vibrations when holding the stones. Others, me included, reported that holding or looking at the stones will affect our mood, which varies from stone to stone. For months now I've been having a relationship with an aquamarine crystal which fills me with a sense of peace. In Wicca teaches usually consist of sharing impressions and feelings, rather than preaching facts.
