Devotional 2
God's Mercy Sometimes Looks Like Resistance
Numbers 22:32

"Behold, I have come out to oppose you..." (ESV)

Nobody likes closed doors.

We pray for opportunities.
God gives obstacles.

We pray for movement.
God gives delays.

We pray for success.
God gives resistance.

Yet Balaam's story reminds us that opposition is not always judgment.

Sometimes it is mercy.

The angel blocking the road was not there to punish Balaam.
The angel was there to save him.

Many of us can look back and recognize moments when God said no to something we desperately wanted.

At the time it felt frustrating.

Later it felt merciful.

Reflection

What closed door in your past now looks like God's protection?

Devotional 1
When Religious People Stop Listening
Numbers 22:31

"Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam..." (ESV)

Balaam's greatest problem was not ignorance.

It was familiarity.

He knew about God.
He spoke about God.
He served as a prophet.

Yet somehow a donkey saw more clearly than he did.

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is becoming so accustomed to spiritual things that we stop paying attention to God Himself.

We can:

attend church
teach classes
quote scripture
serve faithfully

And still become spiritually dull.

The issue is not information.

The issue is attentiveness.

Spiritual maturity is not measured by how much we know about God. It is measured by how responsive we are to His voice.

Devotional 5
God Isn't Finished Yet
Philippians 1:6

Genesis 38 is not the end of Judah's story.

Later, Judah becomes a different man. He offers himself in place of Benjamin. He demonstrates courage and sacrifice.

God was still working.

Sometimes we define ourselves by our worst chapter.

God does not.

Through Christ, failure does not have to be the final word.

Reflection

Where do you need to believe that God is still writing your story?

06/05/2026

Sometimes we're barely holding it together, but God still works through our brokenness. Even Jesus' family tree was filled with scandal and failure - proving that our mess doesn't disqualify us from God's redemption!

Devotional 4
When Conviction Finally Arrives
Genesis 38:26

Judah's turning point came when he was confronted with the truth.

Suddenly the evidence was in front of him. The signet. The cord. The staff.

For the first time in the story, Judah stopped blaming others and acknowledged his own failure.

Real change often begins there.

God cannot heal what we refuse to admit.

Confession is not weakness. It is the first step toward freedom.

Reflection

Is there something you've been excusing instead of confessing?

Tamar: The Woman Who Refused to Be Forgotten

Tamar: The Woman Who Refused to Be Forgotten When most people think about the heroes of the Bible, Tamar’s name rarely comes to mind. Yet she plays a significant role in God’s redemptive story. Genesis 38 tells the story of a woman who was repeatedly overlooked, ignored, and denied justice. Afte...

Devotional 3
Grace in the Family Tree
Matthew 1:3

Most family trees are filled with stories people would rather hide.

Jesus' genealogy is different.

God intentionally included Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba in the story leading to Christ.

That is remarkable.

God did not erase the messy chapters. He redeemed them.

The gospel reminds us that God's grace is not reserved for perfect people. It is given to people who need it.

Reflection

How does Jesus' family tree encourage you about your own story?
