"A liar is far worse, and does greater mischief, than a murderer on the highway; for a liar and false teacher deceives people, seduces souls, and destroys them under the color of God’s Word; such a liar and murderer was Judas, like his father the devil. It was a marvel how Judas should sit at the table with Christ, and not blush for shame, when Christ said: “One of you shall betray me,” etc. The other disciples had not the least thought that Judas should betray Christ; each was rather afraid of himself, thinking Christ meant him: for Christ trusted Judas with the purse, and the whole management of the house-keeping, whence he was held in great repute by the apostles." - Martin Luther, Tabletalk

After his retirement from a long and blessed ministry in PA, Irfon Hughes and his wife Ann came down to Fayetteville and he served for a time as our Assistant Pastor so it's always wonderful to have him come back and preach for us!

"At the darkest time let true Christians rest in the thought, that "greater is He who is for them than all those who are against them." The winds and waves of political and ecclesiastical trouble may beat fiercely over them, and all hope may seem taken away. But still let them not despair. There is One living for them in heaven who can make these winds and waves to cease in a moment. The true Church, of which Christ is the Head, shall never perish. Its glorious Head is almighty, and lives for evermore, and His believing members shall all live, also, and reach home safe at last. (John 14:19.)" - JC Ryle

A good explanation from Kevin DeYoung on why American Old School Presbyterians revised Chapter 23 of the Westminster Confession. Personally, even without the historical object lessons that occurred between 1648 and 1788, I find the revised version to be far more Biblical.

[PS: I know its long, but please don't reply if you haven't read the article]

It’s important to recognize that the two versions of WCF 23:3 represent two different and irreconcilable views of the civil magistrate.

This week's Sabbath Meditation at Providence Presbyterian Church:

"Our kindred sometimes would stand in our way to heaven, and, judging all zeal rashness, would hinder us from being saved. Such carnal relations Spira had; for having advised with them whether he should remain constant in his orthodox opinion, they persuaded him to recant; and so, abjuring his former faith, he fell into horror and despondency of mind. … Take heed of a snare in your bosom. It is a brave saying of Jerome, ‘If my parent should persuade me to deny Christ, if my mother should show me her breast that nursed me, if my wife should go to charm me with her embraces, I would forsake all, and fly to Christ.’" - Thomas Watson

"This is the motive which should constrain us to forgive others. God’s forgiveness towards us is free; it precedes even our repentance and is the cause of it. It is exercised notwithstanding the number, the enormity and the long continuance of our transgressions. He forgives us far more than we can ever be called upon to forgive others. God forgives us in Christ. Out of Christ he is, in virtue of his holiness and justice, a consuming fire; but in him, he is long–suffering, abundant in mercy, and ready to forgive." - Charles Hodge
