Finding Forgiveness: Stop Searching in the Wrong Places
We use search bars constantly—for information, inspiration, and driving directions. But where do you search when your soul aches? Where do you find true forgiveness?
In Hebrews 10:1-22, the scripture addresses our deep longing to deal with guilt, shame, and sin. The Bible describes our state apart from God as completely alienated—spiritally dead, hostile, and separated from a holy Creator by our transgressions.
The Elusive Search: Human Effort
For generations, people have searched for peace in the same ineffective places. In the Old Testament, priests stood daily, repeatedly offering animal sacrifices. Yet, verse 4 states plainly: “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” We do the same thing today when we try to secure forgiveness on our own terms. We think, "If I'm just moral enough, carry out the Ten Commandments, give money, or attend church, I'll be okay." But relying on self-effort to cure a sinful heart is like looking for a lost phone in a car it was never dropped in—it's an elusive, frustrating cycle.
The Effective Reality: Once for All
The forgiveness we actually need is not achieved by us; it is already provided by Jesus. Look at the radical contrast in the text: while earthly priests had to keep standing because their work was never done, Jesus offered a single sacrifice for sins and sat down at the right hand of God. His work is finished.
When Jesus breathed His last on the cross, the thick temple curtain separating man from God’s presence was torn from top to bottom. He nailed our record of debt to the cross, casting our sins into the deepest ocean.
The Response: Draw Near
Forgiveness isn’t a religious ritual; it’s a commitment of life. Stop trying to earn what has already been paid for. Turn from self-reliance, trust in His effective, eternal sacrifice, and draw near.
