From the Desk of Pastor Bill:
Unfairness is part of the human nature and conditions we experience while we live on the Earth. If you have friends, family, neighbors and/or acqaintences, you, at some point in time will feel that you have been treated unfairly. Maybe by a parent, or an employer, church member, church leader, legal process, friend. It doesnt matter who or by what means, you ultimately have the choice to respond to those who have hurt you in 2 ways:
1. you can choose to respond to those who have hurt you by hurting them back. Retaliating. Thats an easy choice. And also the choice that they would expect of you.
2. God's Option: Matt 5:43,44 (NIV); You have heard that it was said, Love your Neighbor and hate your Enemies?, But I (Jesus), tell you, love your Enemies and PRAY for those who persecute you."
When people hurt you, they expect you to retaliate. They expect you to SEE REVENGE. God wants us to do the exact opposite. He was us to respond in LOVE. Responding to mistreatment in LOVE, keeps the offender from controlling us. Booker T. Washington once said,"I will never allow another person to control my life by allowing them to make me HATE them." We cant control how another person treats us, but, we CAN control whether we get bitter, or angry in the process. We CAN control our responses to injustices towards us.
Just because we choose to respond LOVINGLY, doesnt mean we continue to allow the injustice, just that we choose NOT to allow the injustice to control us.
We must lovingly seek justice in this world without retaliation. God's Word commands us to "be fair-minded and just. Do what is right." (Jeremiah 22:3)(NLT).
Martin Luther King Jr. was a great example of this. He fought against injustice without violence. He overcame evil with good through the power of God's Love. He followed the example of Jesus, who chose to forgive us (His persecutors) even when we were killing Him. That's our calling as His followers.
Unfairness and Injustice may be a part of humanity, but, we must RESPOND IN LOVE. pb
