Continuing our series where at the beginning of each week, we share a new prayer as we recognize the long-term impacts of natural and human-caused disasters. We invite you to share your specific prayer concerns in the comments, if you feel called, so we may pray together as a community. This week, we lift up firefighters and first responders.
Let us pray,
God of strength, watch over those who serve in difficult and dangerous work. Give them wisdom in their decisions, rest after their labor, and care for what they carry home. Surround them with people who support them well and may they feel our gratitude. Amen.

Wendell Berry: Contemplating the Machine

A paper crane flies away (Aug 5, 1934 - Aug 31, 2026)

Shall we do without hope? Some days
there will be none. But now
to the dead and dry woods floor
they come again, the first
flowers of the year, the assembly
of the faithful, the beautiful,
wholly given to being.
And in this long season
of machines and mechanical will
there have been small human acts
of compassion, acts of care, work
flowerlike in selfless loveliness.
Leaving hope to the dark
and to a better day,
receive these beauties freely
given, and give thanks.
