To my dear friends,
As we journey through life, we are often met with trials that test our resilience and faith. Reflecting on the tumultuous path of the past three years, I feel compelled to share with you the profound challenges and heartaches that have reshaped our mission, testing our resolve in ways unimaginable. Yet, amidst these relentless battles, our faith and determination have been unwavering, guiding us through every challenge with steadfast resolve.
Eight years ago, we made a prayerful decision to relocate to Panama, a decision influenced by my mother's health and Panama's favorable attributes. Despite the unexpected challenges encountered, including a difficult business environment, our commitment to our mission remained strong.
Our initial venture in Panama with a beautiful hotel and spa in Boquete did not materialize due to our Christian faith, a reminder of the hurdles faced by faith-driven initiatives. Subsequently, we invested in a farm using funds from the Phillips family trust—not GLK money—aiming to create a beacon of hope. This investment, primarily maintained with personal resources, was envisioned as a source of organic produce for the community and GLK INTERNATIONAL, with a clear legal distinction between personal and nonprofit finances maintained.
Over the last 15 years, our family trust has generously invested more than $1.5 million in Evangel Bible Translators and God Loves Kids, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to these ministries. This legacy of giving has been a cornerstone of our mission.
Upon assuming leadership at God Loves Kids 12 years ago, I was confronted with the unsustainable nature of the child sponsorship model. Advised by our CPA, we transitioned towards a more project-oriented approach, aiming for sustainability and self-sufficiency among our sponsored locations. This shift led us to India in 2014 for a discovery trip, confirming the viability of our new model, except for our vital work in Nagaland, which we aimed to continue supporting.
However, challenges in India, including governmental harassment and eventual restrictions on our operations, tested our resolve. Despite these obstacles, when I took over as president, God Loves Kids faced financial dire straits, with only $276 in the bank and payroll looming. A timely donation marked the beginning of a period of growth, leading to an annual income increase to $300,000 within two years, a testament to our team's hard work and God's provision.
The recent betrayal in Uganda, with the embezzlement of funds and subsequent loss of support, alongside personal trials such as my separation from Bess and the ongoing disputes with my brother Darin, have deeply impacted both our mission and personal lives. These experiences have underscored the complexities of leading a global mission and managing personal relationships.
As we pivot towards a peaceful life for my mother in Panama, focusing on retirement, writing, and property management, we remain committed to our values and mission. Despite the setbacks, our journey is one of resilience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. This narrative is a testament to the strength found in community, your unwavering support, and the belief that light prevails even in the darkest moments.
As we forge ahead, our mission is guided by a renewed focus on integrity, community engagement, and stewardship. The challenges we've faced have not only tested our resolve but have deepened our commitment to living a life anchored in faith and service. Though I have resolved to never ask for donations to GLK again, your continued support remains invaluable as we endeavor to close this chapter with honor and grace.
With deepest gratitude and a heart filled with renewed resolve,
Phil Phillips
