English pastor Robert Robinson wrote this hymn in 1758, as he reflected on his dramatic conversion from life with rowdy street gangs to Christian faith. During his rebellious years, Robinson had attended a revival led by George Whitefield just to mock the preacher. However, he was moved by the sermon, and it lead to his spiritual awakening.
