Samuel Francis Smith, a student at Andover Theological Seminary, wrote the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" in 1831, only 55 years after America gained its independence. After the service she showed the pastor and told him how quickly the words came to her during his preaching. He told Elvina about choir director, John Grape, writing a tune the prior week that needed words. The two compositions came together as the hymn we sing today.

THE POINT FROM THE PULPIT: "How are we made right with God?" is the most critical question of our lives. We do not get to Heaven on our own merit. We are dependent on God's mercy and on God's grace. The only way is through faith and through Jesus.
