THREE ASPECTS OF BEING A PRIEST by Matthew Lilley

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “priest”? For me, it's something like the photo below.

I grew up entrenched in non-denominational and charismatic protestant churches. Therefore, to me, priests were a catholic thing. Everything considered “catholic” to me was weird, at best, or heretical at worst. In my local churches, I never grew up hearing about “priests” or a “priesthood.”

I wondered why the Catholics were bringing back the Old Testament. They called their pastors priests. And these “priests” wore strange outfits and even burned incense. We evangelicals didn’t need any of that stuff, right? We had our personal relationships with God.

As I grew older, a few things changed. First of all, I studied church history, which increased my appreciation for other streams of the body of Christ, such as Roman Catholicism. While I am still definitely not Catholic, I do believe there are sincere followers of Christ in Roman Catholic congregations. I mean no disrespect by posting the photo of the catholic priests.

I also learned about the Protestant Reformation. In the 1500s, a large number of believers splintered off from Roman Catholicism. There were several issues involved, but one of the chief issues was what Martin Luther called the “priesthood of all believers.” He contended that all believers were priests and could access God’s presence without any mediator other than Christ.

I also started noticing references to priests, the priesthood, sacrifices, and other related terms throughout the New Testament. Maybe Luther was on to something. Passages like this were particularly noteworthy:

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. I Peter 2:4-5

I want to dive deeper into these verses today. First of all, I want to show you that your original purpose and eternal destiny are to be a kingdom of priests. Priesthood is not a side issue!

3) Priests Must Be Holy
