First Church of Christ, Congregational, 1652

First Church of Christ, Congregational, 1652 First Church, 1652, in Farmington is an Open and Affirming community of the United Church of Christ. Welcome to our guests and to old friends.

We are a community of faith dedicated to extending God's great and life-changing love to one and all. As our pastor declares at the beginning of worship:
"Welcome to all who have no church home, need strength, want to follow Christ, have doubts, or do not believe! Welcome to people of all ages, abilities, races, nationalities, and ethnicities! Welcome to people of all sexual orientations and gende

r expressions! Welcome to people of all political persuasions and financial means! No matter who you are, who you love, what your family looks like, or where you come from, you are welcome at First Church in the name of Jesus the Christ: Jesus who welcomes everybody and turns nobody away. You are invited to live into Christ's transformational love, for God never leaves us as we were found." As our lives are changed through our encounters with the Gospel, we seek to spread God's great message of love to our community and world by working for justice and peace, by intentionally growing our faith as disciples of Christ Jesus, by growing in generosity in the world and in the church, by joyously worshiping God inside and outside our Meetinghouse, and by committing ourselves to God's purposes in the world.

This Sunday’s scripture comes from Philippians, a thank you note from the Apostle Paul, to the church at Philippi. He begins, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” As this is my final week as your pastor, I, Rev. Susan, thank God every time I remember you! Thank you for sharing your life, your jokes, your questions, and your kindness. I pray God’s guidance and joy for your life. I carry you in my heart.

One of my earliest church memories is of standing on a pew, surrounded by these big, tall adults, and the hymn, “Standing on the Promises.” I loved the feeling of being a part of a community that could make such a beautiful sound. To this day, I find myself singing “Standing on the Promises” in times of difficulty, in times of thanksgiving, and in times of confusion. This Sunday, we celebrate the Church choir and offer them our thanksgiving for leading us in making a “joyful noise to the Lord!” After worship, ask your child what song they liked and why. See if you can find a recording of it, and play it periodically for your child. This may be a part of their faith they carry with them throughout their lives.

This Sunday we will celebrate the baptism of 2 young people in our congregation. If your child has been baptized, tell your children about their baptism. What happened on that great day? Why do you suppose water is used? Talk about all the ways we experience water in our lives—to wash, to refresh, to nurture, to play in. Baptism is a visible way for God, parents, and the church family to say, "You belong to God, and you are deeply loved". Baptism is also a symbol of a new beginning: The water shows that God always forgives. Just as taking a bath washes away dirt, the waters of baptism represent God washing away the things that separate us from God, giving us a fresh start.

Please join us this Sunday at 10 a.m. for our Children's Sunday service!

This week’s Bible lesson is the story of the birthday of the church in Acts 2:1-12. It’s a great story about God’s spirit drawing people from all over the Ancient Near East together in care, in service, and in love. This brings to mind Desmond Tutu’s children’s book, God’s Dream. Archbishop Tutu believes God’s dream involves people who reach out and hold each other’s hands. People who sometimes get angry and hurt each other, AND also say sorry and forgive. It’s a wish that everyone will see they are brothers and sisters, no matter their way of speaking to God, no matter the size of their nose or the shade of their skin. It’s a beautiful book, and it can be found at the Bristol and Avon libraries.

One of this week’s Bible lesson is Psalm 139: 1-18—a psalm about the closeness of God. This reminds me of Saint Patrick’s Prayer—a prayer your child could memorize and carry with them wherever they go. (This can be sung to the tune of Morning Has Broken)

Christ before us
