Feed my Sheep

June 7th is the Feast of Corpus Christi, a feast day not celebrated often in the Episcopal Church and certainly never supplanting the readings on a Sunday. Corpus Christi (literally, “the Body of Christ”) was initially advanced by St. Thomas Aquinas and made a churchwide solemnity by the Pope in the 13th century. The feast draws attention to the holiness and miracle of Christ’s Presence in the Eucharist which not all denominations agree on but most practice Communion, the Lord’s Supper, Holy Eucharist in some way. In the Middle Ages, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, the priest would bring the Blessed Sacrament out into the street, processing through the village and town, with the church community, then back to the parish again. The Eucharist was brought into the midst of the people, among them, acknowledging the gift of “God with us” in Christ. Corpus Christi reminds us that when we take Christ into our bodies in Holy Communion, with faith and surrender, we receive the blessing and mercy of Christ’s forgiveness and grace.

So, I decided to share another sonnet by The Reverend Dr. Malcolm Guite from his book Sounding the Seasons. I hope that you enjoy it and – in prayer and reflection, and hope - celebrate the gift Christ gave us in the gift of His sacrifice, His Body and Blood, which is His grace and love for us.

This bread is light, dissolving, almost air,
A little visitation on my tongue,
A wafer-thin sensation, hardly there.
This taste of wine is brief in flavour, flung
A moment to the palate’s roof and fled,
Even its aftertaste a memory.
Yet this is how He comes. Through wine and bread
Love chooses to be emptied into me.
He does not come in unimagined light
Too bright to be denied, too absolute
For consciousness, too strong for sight,
Leaving the seer blind, the poet mute;
Chooses instead to seep into each sense,
To dye himself into experience.

Blessed Memorial Day!

“O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Pentecost by The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Guite

Today we feel the wind beneath our wings
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays
Today the church draws breath at last and sings
As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise.
This is the feast of fire, air, and water
Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth.
The earth herself awakens to her maker
And is translated out of death to birth.
The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release
Today the gospel crosses every border
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace
Today the lost are found in His translation.
Whose mother tongue is Love in every nation.

Feed my Sheep

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1

I have certainly written about God’s creation before. I was recently in Colorado for our youngest daughter’s graduation. One day the family went on a rare hike, our four children, my wife, and I. It was glorious and I was moved to tears of joy on more than one occasion by God’s incredible goodness to me in my life and for the earth our Lord has given us to treasure. The photo that I am sharing does very little justice to what I actually saw but it made me mindful of all the ways God places Himself in front of us, in majesty, grace, and blessing. There is suffering and pain in this life, sure enough, the loss of beloved parents, siblings, even children. There is armed conflict, the hubris of leaders, and rampant selfishness and violence aplenty. We have a million reasons to turn away from the world in anger, frustration, or even disbelief.

Yet how can we look at the sky and not praise God? Might we find comfort in the preciousness of this good earth, the kindness and mercy that God shows us as His creation unfolds before us every day? Might we all, regardless of where we are in this life, look at the world that proclaims the glory of God and come together and praise the God who means for all to love one another under His sky, His sun, and His Christ who saves us in and through His love? I am not exactly sure how these random thoughts come together but I know that walking in the woods, hiking up a hillside, or beholding the stars and knowing that they are instruments of God’s glory is something we all might have in common. Maybe, if we can love and marvel at God’s wondrous universe, His blessed earth, we might see that God, in His mercy, through His creation, loves us back?
