From Hazzan Dan Gross

Our Lillian E. Kaufman Memorial Concert featuring Profeti della Quinta is now just two weeks away.

This week’s video features Profeti della Quinta’s founder and director, Elam Rotem, discussing the remarkable life and legacy of Salomone Rossi, one of the most fascinating figures in Jewish musical history. A contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi, Rossi was among the first composers to bring the rich musical language of the Italian Renaissance into the synagogue, creating a new kind of Hebrew liturgical music that had never existed before.

This video offers a wonderful introduction to the story behind the music you will hear on June 17.

I hope you enjoy it and will join us for what promises to be a truly special evening.

A Visit to the Jackson Home

This morning, Hazzan Dan Gross, a founding member of our Executive Committee, had the privilege of previewing The Jackson Home at Greenfield Village ahead of its public opening.
Relocated from Selma, Alabama through an extraordinary preservation effort, the historic home of Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson served as a gathering place, refuge, and organizing center during the Civil Rights Movement, welcoming leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the struggle for voting rights and equality.
Today, the home stands as a living testimony to the enduring pursuit of justice, freedom, human dignity, and equal rights for all people. We are deeply grateful to The Henry Ford for safeguarding this sacred piece of American history and ensuring that future generations can encounter its story firsthand.

A message from Hazzan Dan Gross:

Four weeks from today will be our Lillian E. Kaufman Memorial Concert featuring Profeti della Quinta.

Profeti della Quinta is internationally acclaimed for their expressive performances of Renaissance and early Baroque vocal music, blending beautiful vocal harmonies with historically informed performance practice. As an introduction to the ensemble, I am pleased to share this video featuring music from the very program they will perform for us.

Listen for the extraordinary clarity of the vocal lines, the rich multi-voice harmonies, and the haunting sound of the lute. Even if this style of music is unfamiliar to you, I think you will quickly understand why audiences around the world have been captivated by them.

I hope you enjoy the video and will join us on June 17 for what promises to be a very special evening.

Join us at Adat Shalom’s upcoming Lillian E. Kaufman Memorial Concert on June 17, 2026, featuring the extraordinary ensemble Profeti della Quinta, an internationally acclaimed vocal group specializing in Renaissance and early Baroque music.

Profeti della Quinta traces its origins to Kibbutz Kabri in Israel’s Upper Galilee and is now based in Basel, Switzerland, where the ensemble has grown into one of the world’s leading interpreters of early vocal music. We are especially fortunate to welcome them to Adat Shalom, as this concert is part of a rare North American tour with only three stops.

Our Ray Maisel (z”l) Global Jewish Diversity Initiative continues with a special Turkish Shabbat, featuring Turkish melodies from guest Cantor Yaakov Abudaram and a sermon by educator Ruben Shimonov. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our members Gina and Yuksel Erpardo for sharing their delicious Jewish Turkish recipes at Shabbat kiddush, sharing their stories of Turkish Jewry along with our guests following Shabbat morning services.

As we celebrate this Turkish Shabbat, we lovingly remember Dr. Harry Maisel z"l, whose devotion to his wife Ray was the inspiration for ongoing programming that celebrates global Jewish diversity. Harry founded our Rachel Elias Maisel z"l Bukharian Textile Collection. Harry's commitment to promoting understanding of the wide range of Jewish cultures and traditions will always be cherished. We hope you’ll join us for Turkish Shabbat and celebrate this part of his legacy.

Guest Cantor Yaakov Abudaram is a passionate cantor with a rich Sephardic heritage. Born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, he began his Torah studies at a young age and was recognized for his unique voice. He honed his skills with cantorial lessons in an Orthodox synagogue and under the guidance of the current chief Rabbi of Turkey, who was the main chazzan at the time. Yaakov's unique style blends traditional Sephardic makamim and nusachs with a warm, bass voice, incorporating vibrato and micronotes.

Born in Uzbekistan, Ruben Shimonov is an educator, community builder, and artist passionate about Jewish diversity and intercultural understanding. He is the American Sephardi Federation's National Director of Education & Sephardi House—an innovative initiative that works to enrich Jewish campus life and young leadership with the vibrancy, richness, and wisdom of the Sephardic and Mizrahi world.
