What properties can God “give up” and still be God? Properties that are essential to deity are things like omniscience, omnipresence, aseity, infinity, necessity, and omnipotence. But Jesus often grew weary (John 4:6), hungry (Matthew 4:2), and mentally distressed (Lk. 22:44). How can Jesus, who is God, truly experience those weaknesses? Further, He suffered severe temptation to sin (Heb. 4:15), something else that, according to James 1:13, God cannot experience. And he was ignorant of certain facts (Mark 13:32).

How can Jesus seemingly give up these essential properties of divinity? These are de facto properties of God that cannot be truncated or forfeited. None of these attributes can be eradicated and it still be a description of deity.

God cannot cease to be God. So how does the Christian make sense of Jesus’ weakness in the flesh?

Join us as we explore some unique aspects of Jesus’ incarnation.

If properties like omniscience, omnipresence, aseity, infinity, necessity, and omnipotence are essential to deity how can Jesus seemingly give up these essential properties of divinity in order to become human?

When Jesus was conceived in the womb of Mary something utterly unique happened: The Second Person of the Trinity (the divine Logos) assumed a second nature. He became a human being with two natures, human AND divine.

This class will discuss a possible model to explain how this can be.
