First Baptist Church Falfurrias 120th Anniversary Celebration!
Today, as we stand at the milestone of 120 years as a congregation, we are not merely celebrating the endurance of a building or the survival of an organization. We are celebrating the covenant faithfulness of Jesus Christ, who promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church.
In our modern world, people view the church as an optional weekly lecture or a consumer product to be used and discarded. But the Reformed tradition reminds us of a deeper truth. As R.C. Sproul beautifully taught, Christianity is not a religion of individualism. When God saves us, He immediately binds us to a family. For 120 years, this local body has been that family—a physical manifestation of the body of Christ.
To belong to this church is a matter of joyful duty and spiritual survival. John MacArthur reminds us that church membership is God’s design for our protection, placing us under the care of shepherds who watch over our souls. John Piper calls membership a 'blood-bought gift' that sustains our faith and preserves our joy.
For more than a century, generations have gathered in this place to hear the Word purely preached, to receive the sacraments, and to carry out the 'one another' commands of Scripture. We have wept together, rejoiced together, and held one another accountable. As we look back with immense gratitude for 120 years of gospel ministry, let us look forward with a renewed commitment to this local flock. Let us refuse to be 'lone-ranger' Christians, and instead proudly stand as committed members of Christ's visible kingdom until He returns.
