2025.12.19 Thursday

Luke 15: 6-7
_6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent._

The parables of the lost sheep and that of the lost coin vividly elaborate how passionately God desires sinners to repent. Leaving the 99 means God's highest priority is saving sinners. When a child is missing from home, any sane parent cannot be settled. They cannot reasonably focus on anything else. They make every effort feasible to bring back the missing child. God wants you to be saved. Even if it was to save only you, Jesus would have still come. Advent is for you. Realizing His passion for souls to be redeemed, let us direct our focus to evangelism. As individuals, families, congregations, Churches, and Christendom, let us mainstream the proclamation of the gospel. Ask yourself what you can do to get someone to give their lives to Jesus. In so doing we advocate for someone's Advent, when Christ comes into their lives. Preach Christ always.

Micah 6: 8
_“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God._

The prophet Micah here pictures a courtroom where God accuses his people of unfaithfulness despite all the great exploits He did for them. Confused, the people ask what kind of worship God wants. God responds that he has already shown them through prophets like Amos, Hosea and Isaiah that what He wants is justice and love towards their fellow human beings, and faithfulness and humility towards God. The expectation could have been offering sacrifices correctly, fasting, and long prayers, yet God responds by demanding justice, love, and humility. Correct sacrifices and fervent religious exercises are of no value if the worshippers do not have the right attitudes and right conduct. True spirituality is communal. He taught us to pray saying ‘Our Father who art…’ not ‘My Father who art…’, speaking to a communal worship. Of the ten commandments, only three talk about the relationship between God and man, while the seven are about our relationships with other people [Exodus 20]. In the prayer He taught us, there are seven petitions, of which three are requests about God while the four are requests about ‘us’ [Matthew 6: 9]. Even on the cross, He asked Peter to take care of His mother [John 19: 26-27]. God selflessly commits to our welfare. This Advent, remember ‘whatever concerns you concern God, and is a worthy subject for prayer.’

2025.12.17 Wednesday

Mark 10: 52
_“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road._

This festive season is characterised by family gatherings or reunions, it is void to be excited about someone’s coming for such reunions with no intention to personally meet them. This Advent, your commemoration is void when it passes without a personal encounter with Christ. Bartimaeus in our passage today had an encounter with Jesus Christ, and he received his sight. Interestingly, Christ did not command Bartimaeus to follow Him; rather, He sent him away, saying, ‘Go, your faith has healed you.’ Impacted by the encounter, Bartimaeus felt that there is no other place to be than following Christ. The most despised place in following Christ is more honourable than being anywhere in the world [Psalms 84: 10-11]. An encounter with Him makes us realise that His presence is better than mere presents. We cease to fuss over gifts and get thrilled by the Giver. The greater miracle was Bartimaeus following Jesus than the restoration of sight. It would have been unfortunate if he had received his sight and remained compared to remaining physically blind while following Christ. Are you following Christ? An encounter with Christ makes us dread losing Him [Psalm 51: 11]. A taste of His presence makes us follow Him wherever He leads us. Let us seek His presence this Advent, He promises to reveal Himself to us [James 4: 8]. Read the Word and you will find Him bound in His promises.

2025.12.16 Tuesday

Matthew 7: 2-5
_2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye._

This Advent, we also commemorate our expectation of Christ’s second coming to judge the living and the dead. If only we could prepare for judgment day, the same way we are so ready to judge others. Now, those who continually find fault with others only invite judgment upon themselves, both from fellows and from God. Our expectation determines our visitation. This is observed by the Psalmist who says, ‘To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd,’ [Psalm 18: 25-26]. One can express it to say, to the judgmental, He shows himself as judgmental. Those who stalk others to find fault usually do so in a narcissistic bid to soothe or hide their faults. They seek to expose others' weaknesses in the hope that if they are exposed too, they will not feel alone in that situation. As we anticipate Jesus’ coming, let us not judge others but seek repentance so that we may be found blameless on the day of our Lord [1 Corinthians 1: 8, 2 Peter 3: 14, Philippians 1: 10].

2025.12.15 Monday

Isaiah 5: 22-23
_22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, 23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocent._

Commemorating Christ’s coming gains substance when we comprehend the reason for His coming. This is best summed in His manifesto, where He said, ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,’ [Luke 4: 18]. Our Isaiah passage today carries the same liberationist accent emphasising justice. The prophet warns the judges and officials against luxuries sponsored by bribes, but to seek justice. Martin Luther King Jr echoes this in his powerful ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’ in 1963, where he said, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ By ignoring justice, we render the coming of Christ void. As Christians, we are called to further our Lord’s manifesto. We should be agents for justice, though in many cases that actually risks our safety. Yet there is no true luxury and tranquillity that prevails while oppressing others. Stepping on others can never be a sustainable ladder to rise into anything. True spirituality is not selfish, but selflessly spending ourselves even for others. In Christ we are a community. This festive season, be the reason for someone’s happiness.

2025.12.03 Wednesday

John 8: 42-45
_42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!_

When we receive guests we do not get overjoyed by their presence that we ignore where they are coming from. As we reflect on Jesus' coming, He talks about where He is coming from, especially that He is on a mission. This season is therefore a moment for reflect on our mission in serving God. Thinking about the reason for season motivates our devotion. Amen

2025.12.02 Tuesday

Matthew 21: 7-11
_7 They brought the donkey and the c**t and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” 11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”_

As we have just started the Advent season, in today’s passage, we meet Christ coming into Jerusalem. The word ‘advent’ is from Latin, meaning ‘to come’, so the account of His coming into Jerusalem fits well into this season. We can learn about His coming by observing how He came earlier. they had arranged for the donkey, but most of the people did not realise or understand the cause for the triumphal entry. Many thought it was a political move aimed at overthrowing the Romans. This is also true of our times; many are excited for the festive season as a time for family reunions, eating good food, and even compromising to do things they usually would not do. Let us be reminded that we commemorate Jesus’ coming to save us, that He will come again to judge the living and the dead, with gratitude that He came into our personal lives at salvation.

2024.12.25 Wednesday

*Luke 2: 1-20*
_4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David._

Jesus’ being born as a descendant of David was of the essence as the prophecies were consistent in this quality. As a patriarchal community, Joseph needed to be a descendant of David to fit this requirement. However, with Mary inevitably supposed to be a virgin at birth, it was necessitated that she also be a descendant of David [Luke 3: 24-38]. Being born of a virgin means He was with no sin even from His birth, not even the original sin. His birth met all expectations no matter how complicated they were. May we too seek to live blameless and pure lives [Philippians 2: 15].

*Prayer*
It is very complicated to satisfy people's expectations, yet I ask you Lord to help me live a blameless life. You met all the criterion prophesied about the birth of the Messiah despite impossibilities, I believe you can help me to shun compromising settings that can raise suspicions and blame from fellow brethren, family, and other publics. Make me an example for the believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity [1 Timothy 4: 12]. Amen.

*Isaiah 9: 2-7*

_6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace._

As we enter this Christmastide, retaining the festivities let us also return to the reason for the season. He was born so that we may die to our sinful selves and be alive in Him [Ephesians 2, Romans 5: 1-17, 6: 11]. This transformation is clear in that weak as we were, we are engulfed by His authority. Isaiah mentions that authority rests upon His shoulders [verse 6], and the New Testament elaborates that He is the head, and we are the body- which includes the shoulders [Colossians 1: 18]. May the commemoration of His birth bring to your memory that godly authority is your portion.

*Prayer*
I love you, God, for you loved me before I knew you [Jeremiah 1: 5, 1 John 4: 10]. You sent our Lord Jesus Christ to be born as a baby for me to die to my weakness and be reborn, baptized into the power of His authority. Help my necessary self-consciousness to embrace Jesus’ selflessness so that you can use me in your redemption of nations. Amen

2024.12.12 Thursday

*2 Corinthians 8: 1-15*
_3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us._

As we have been ushered into this festive season, we are reminded this is a time of giving or generosity. Learning from our God who so loved us and demonstrated it in giving us His one and only Son (John 3: 16), let us be inspired by the same sacrificial urge (not restricted by any lacking- verse 3). No one is too poor that they cannot give. The Macedonian Church was possibly Paul’s next help project, yet they gave. Give while you are still alive, do not relegate the privilege of sharing your blessings to estate executors after your death.

*Prayer*
Loving Father, we learn the joy of giving from you. You gave your only Son and consequently adopted us all to sonship. Help me to realize that in giving the needy and beloveds I receive more of you, for it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20: 35). May I radiate your love through generosity. Amen.

2024.12.11 Wednesday

*Luke 7: 18-30*
_19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”_

John the Baptist had done a good job as a forerunner to Christ's first coming but was now in prison. He possibly felt abandoned and wondered if the Christ he had preached knew about his plight. These are feelings common to many of us in times of trials and pain. Yet Jesus’ response explicitly shows that He knew John more than all that lived. Salvation does not guarantee that we will not face thorns in our ways, rather He demonstrated that thorns can be worn as a crown (Matthew 27: 29). As forerunners of Christ’s second coming we may meet challenges, yet we are assured that Jesus is with us always.

*Prayer*
Dear Heavenly Father, remind me of your presence each time I struggle with the pricks of this world’s thorns. Let me see that they are blessings in disguise (2 Corinthians 12: 7-10), and therefore be grateful for all suffering (Colossians 1: 24/ 1 Thessalonians 5: 18). This Advent may even our suffering draw us nearer my God to thee. Amen.
