During June and July, First Church will be holding a cereal drive to provide much needed boxes of cereal to area food pantries. The Board of Missions has a designated collection area in Fellowship Hall for your donations. Regular-sized boxes are preferred over the super-sized. Thank you for your generosity.

SUNDAY, JUNE 14th - 10:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE - THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST - GRADUATION & YOUTH RECOGNITION SUNDAY. The Reflection is "The Engine of Mission: Compassion" and is based on Matthew 9:35-10:8. Jesus' mission is a hands on activity. Through our hands, mercy reaches out in concrete actions. Jesus is compassionate. But Jesus doesn't keep that compassion to himself. Jesus recruits, sends, presses ordinary disciples into extraordinary service -- preach this good news, teach these people, heal in my name -- as if Jesus' own ministry were now going to run through their mouths, their hands, their lives. It's no mistake to say, "The Church has a mission," as if mission were a program we might fund if the budget allows. No! Jesus has a mission, and his mission has a church -- that's us! The Chancel Choir will sing an Anthem, "For Love Shall Be Our Song," by Douglas Wagner. Payton Dziekan is our Director of Music Ministries. Bea Benedict is our Organist & Pianist. Volunteers for the Salem Nutrition Center are needed to make sandwiches and pack snacks that are given to guests. If you are able to volunteer on Tuesday, June 9th from 9:30 AM -1 PM, please contact Dee Jackson at 585-354-1872 or [email protected]. Dee can provide a ride for volunteers. SUNDAY, JUNE 7TH - 10:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE - SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST. The Reflection is "The Scandal of Jesus' Calling" and is based on Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26. It wasn't just that Jesus called ordinary people to work with him in his salvation of the world. It was that Jesus scandalized the world by not only eating and drinking with sinners, but by calling sinners to follow. Jesus Christ not only forgives and saves sinners, but he also calls them to do his work. What a scandalous way to serve the world! And yet, controversial though it was from the first, this way of salvation appears to be uniquely Jesus' way with us. Jesus comes to us and calls us to follow his Way just as we are. Payton Dziekan is our Director of Music Ministries & cellist and will be sharing three musical selections from J.S. Bach's "Suite No. 1": "Prelude"; "Sarabande"; "Gigue." Bea Benedict is our Organist & Pianist. HOLY COMMUNION WILL BE CELEBRATED. WE PRACTICE "OPEN COMMUNION," meaning all people and children are invited to receive Communion. Those worshipping via our Live-Stream or Audio Worship Services who wish to participate in Communion, please have available a piece of bread/cracker/crouton & your favorite fruit of the vine. SUNDAY, MAY 31st - 10:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE - TRINITY SUNDAY - NEW MEMBER SUNDAY. The Reflection is "Creation: God's Love in Action" and is based on Genesis 1:1-2:4a. From the very first verse of scripture, God comes at us not with a safe, domesticated word but with an act -- an audacious, creative, risk-laden act. "In the beginning, God created." Why? Not out of necessity. Not out of boredom. But out of love -- wild, world-making love. Creation is the first sign that ours is a God who refuses to be God without us. That's good news because if God loved the world into being, then we can trust that same love is holding us now. SUNDAY, MAY 17th - 10:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE - PENTECOST SUNDAY. The Reflection is "Encouraging Breath" and is based on Acts 2:1-21 & John 20:19-23. Today's Church finds itself in the midst of some daunting challenges. The religious culture of North American has shifted. A higher percentage of Americans say they disbelieve in God, have no interest in affiliating with a religious institution, and report having no inclination to seek the ministrations of any church. Many local churches are struggling. There is great fear in scores of congregations. What does the future hold? Will our church survive? It is therefore a great time for the Church to receive encouragement from our conviction that Jesus Christ has not only risen from the dead, but the Risen Christ has also returned to us, breathing Christ's life-giving Spirit upon us, telling us we need not fear. Our Chancel Choir will sing an Anthem, "With the Help of the Spirit of the Lord” by Jayne Southwick Cool, directed by Payton Dziekan, our Director of Music Ministries. SUNDAY, MAY 17th - 10:00 AM CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP SERVICE - SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - ASCENSION SUNDAY. The Reflection is "Jesus Prays for Us" and is based on Acts 1:6-14 & John 17:1-11. It's tough out there. We try to be faithful, try to live like followers of the Way of Jesus in a world that often couldn't care less. And yet, here's the gospel truth: we're not on this faith journey alone; Jesus is praying for us. That's not sentimental language. That's the message of this Sunday's Gospel Reading. In a world full of rival gods and rival gospels, where faith can feel like a fragile, flickering flame, Jesus is interceding -- right now -- for you and me. When it's easy to believe in the safety of sanctuary, but harder when you're in the boardroom, the classroom, or scrolling through the headlines -- Jesus is praying. The Church is here, the Spirit is here, Jesus is here -- praying us into faithfulness.
