Sunday we listened as Jesus spoke with Nicodemus, a deeply religious man who still needed something only God could give. Jesus told him, “You must be born again.” This week, we’ll slow down and consider what that means for you personally, not merely knowing about God, but receiving new life from Him and learning to walk in it.

Day 1: Close to Jesus Isn’t the Same as Knowing Jesus

Scripture Reading: John 3:1-8

Nicodemus had an impressive spiritual résumé. He knew Scripture. He practiced his religion. He was respected as a teacher and leader. If anyone could have pointed to his religious accomplishments and said, “Surely I’m all right with God,” it was Nicodemus.

Yet Jesus looked beyond everything Nicodemus had accomplished and went straight to his greatest need: “You must be born again.” That should cause you to examine your own heart.

You can attend church, know Bible stories, serve faithfully, give generously, and be surrounded by Christian people without ever personally trusting Christ. Christianity cannot be inherited from your parents or absorbed by sitting in a church building.

Jesus didn’t tell Nicodemus to become more religious. He told him he needed new life. Your confidence before God cannot rest in what you have done for Him. Salvation rests in what Christ has done for you. The question isn’t simply whether Christianity is part of your life. The question is whether Christ has given you new life.

When you think about why you believe you are right with God, what are you trusting most? Your religious background and good works, or Jesus Christ and what He has done for you?

Look back over the week and remember the burden you named on Monday. Have you acknowledged it, asked boldly, received today’s grace, and surrendered to God’s answer? As you gather at church this weekend, don’t come pretending you have no weaknesses. Come ready to worship the Savior whose grace is sufficient for every one of them.

Day 5: When His Power Moves In

Scripture Reading: John 1:9-14

Paul eventually stopped measuring God’s faithfulness by whether the thorn disappeared because something better had captured his attention: “that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

That word rest carries the beautiful picture of dwelling or pitching a tent over someone. Paul asked for the thorn to leave; Christ instead promised that His power would move in and cover Paul’s weakness.

That changes surrender. Surrender is not shrugging your shoulders and saying, “I guess nothing will ever change.” Biblical surrender is placing yourself into the hands of Christ and saying, “Lord, remove this if that glorifies You. But if You permit it to remain, make Your grace sufficient and Your power visible through me.”

The thorn may remain, but you are not abandoned beneath it. Christ is there. His grace surrounds your insufficiency. His strength meets your weakness. His presence becomes greater than the circumstance you wanted Him to remove.

Sometimes grace changes the circumstance and sometimes grace changes what the circumstance can do to you.

Either way, Christ is enough.

What would it mean for you to stop making the removal of your burden the measure of God’s faithfulness and instead ask Him to make Christ’s power visible through it?

Day 4: Where His Strength Shows

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

“My strength is made perfect in weakness.” That does not mean weakness itself is strength. Paul wasn’t celebrating pain simply because pain is good. He had asked Christ to remove it.

The amazing part is what Christ can do in the very place where you know you are insufficient.

You naturally want to offer God your strongest parts, the abilities you understand, the areas you control, the things you do well. Yet God often displays Christ most clearly where you cannot take the credit.

Your weakness becomes the stage upon which His strength becomes obvious.
Perhaps that changes the question you ask about your struggle. Instead of only asking, “How can I get out of this?” you can also ask, “How can Christ be seen in me while I walk through this?”

God is not finished with you. He is still shaping, teaching, and maturing you. Your weakness does not prevent Christ from working through you. It may become the very place where His power is most clearly seen.

Where do you feel most inadequate right now, and what would dependence on Christ rather than hiding, resenting, or compensating for that weakness look like today?

Day 3: Enough for Today

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

Jesus did not answer Paul by promising, “The thorn will soon disappear.” He answered, “My grace is sufficient for thee.” and that distinction matters.

It's only natural to try and measure God’s goodness by whether circumstances improve. When the problem remains, you can begin wondering whether God has heard you. But sometimes His answer is not removal. Sometimes His answer is grace.

Christ says, in effect, “What I supply is enough for what I permit.”

Notice, too, that grace is sufficient, not necessarily abundant for every imaginary trouble you might face tomorrow, but sufficient for what God has placed before you today.

Tomorrow’s burden can feel crushing when you try to carry it with today’s grace. Jesus tells you not to live there. Today has enough trouble of its own. Whatever today contains, Christ is already sufficient for it.

You may still feel weak. The circumstance may still hurt. But you do not face it with your resources alone. Jesus Himself is your supply. His grace is enough for today.

What future burden are you carrying in your imagination today, and how could you entrust tomorrow to Christ while receiving His grace for what is actually before you now?
