🚜 Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery Matching Challenge!

An anonymous donor has generously offered to match up to $35,000 toward the purchase of a much-needed new backhoe for Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery — and they’re challenging our community to match that amount!

The cemetery’s current backhoe is over 40 years old, and finding parts has become extremely difficult, causing delays in grave digging. The new backhoe will cost about $90,000. The Greater Jefferson County Foundation graciously granted the cemetery $20,000 earlier this year to go towards this, so between that and the matching donation challenge we will be able to meet our goal with your help!

As a private, non-tax supported perpetual care cemetery, Fairfield Evergreen relies on burial fees and community donations to operate. Thanks to its newly established endowment fund, staff have already been able to reset headstones near L Street and build a new street (M Street) on the east side of the property.

How you can help:

All donations toward the match must be made by Dec. 20.

Checks can be made payable to Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery, with “$35,000 backhoe match” in the memo line.

Time for summer cleanup. Please have all ground flowers removed by June 15th. Everything up on stones and in vases can stay till November. Thanks for a great memorial day. All the decorations looked wonderful.

Dear Friends of Evergreen Cemetery,

As you know, our cemetery is more than just a resting place - 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺.

It's a special place of beauty and tranquility that holds the stories of our community’s past - preserving the legacy of pioneers, farmers, civic leaders, freedom seekers, and countless families who have called this place home.

The cemetery is a 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝙣𝙤𝙩-𝙛𝙤𝙧-𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙩, 𝙣𝙤𝙣-𝙩𝙖𝙭-𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙
entity, and today we face significant financial challenges in ensuring its ongoing care and preservation.

In response, we established an endowment fund last year with a goal of raising $𝟮 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 to secure the cemetery’s future and maintain its high standards of care. Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, the fund has already grown to $𝟱𝟳𝟳,𝟬𝟬𝟬!

In 2023, the fund generated approximately $𝟱,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁, helping to cover essential operational expenses. As the fund continues to grow, we plan to address important projects such as road repairs, fallen headstones, and invest in new equipment.

We are incredibly grateful to those who have already contributed, and we humbly ask for your continued support. 𝗡𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, and every gift helps us maintain this sacred land for future generations.

Evergreen Cemetery would like to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Thank you all for your continued support of our cemetery.

As many come to visit their loved ones this week/weekend, we'd like to humbly remind everyone of our Endowment Fund Campaign that was established last year. Evergreen Cemetery is a special place of beauty and tranquility to honor and remember our loved ones. Our hope is to remain financially viable and independent, which will allow us to preserve and revitalize the beautiful cemetery grounds for future generations.

Contrary to common belief, we are a private, non-tax supported, perpetual care cemetery. Today we are facing serious financial challenges in maintaining our community’s cemetery. Historically, the funding of the cemetery came from lot sales, burial income, occasional donations, grants and a small stipend from the City of Fairfield to maintain the Old City Cemetery section. This is no longer enough due to the escalating costs of maintenance, combined with the downward trend of burials, upward trend of cremations and declining population.

The board came to a very critical decision to set a goal of raising a minimum of 2 million dollars to invest in the Endowment Fund. This will enable us to continue to operate independently and maintain the high standard of care, as we do not receive any state or government funding, other than the city mowing stipend. The alternative would result in the cemetery being taken over by the city, becoming the responsibility of the taxpayer. In the first six months we have been able to raise over $250,000! While we still have a long way to go, we're incredibly grateful to all who have donated thus far.

No donation is too small. Each dollar will go toward maintaining our Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery. We are a 50l (C) (13) organization allowing all donations to be tax deductible. The 501 (C)(13) identifies cemeteries.

The week leading up to Memorial Day is the busiest week at the cemetery. With that being said, the cemetery kindly asks all visitors to please be patient and courteous when driving. Those who are able are encouraged to park in the parking lot and walk to the stones so that those who aren’t able can easily drive to their stones.

The crew at the cemetery has been working very hard to keep the cemetery maintained and looking its best for Memorial Day. With all the rain that we’ve had, please refrain from driving on the grass. Thank you for your support of Evergreen Cemetery!
