Immmanuel Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. We preach Christ crucified for the forgiveness of sins. Immanuel is not a business, nor for entertainment, but a place for God's people to hear His Word and receive His gifts in the Holy Sacraments. Thus Immanuel is a CHURCH, the fellowship of believers gathered in Jesus Christ liturgically, spiritually, and sacramentally.

The 7th Sunday after Pentecost

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home:
LSB #733 vs. 1

O Lord, let Your merciful ears be attentive to the prayers of Your servants, and by Your Word and Spirit teach us how to pray that our petitions may be pleasing before You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Catechism Review for Sunday: The Apostles’ Creed

What is the 3rd Article of the Apostles’ Creed?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

What does this mean?
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

Holy Gospel for Pentecost 7: Luke 11:1–13

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Vs. 1

Disciples desire to pray! But with the challenges of life it is often heard to know how and for what to pray. Fear and doubt keeps us from asking, seeking and knocking. Will not the Lord who gave His life to save you answer your prayer in the best way possible for His children? While the answer is not to the liking of our Old Flesh, the New Man rejoices in the Lord’s answer whatever it might be.

Epistle for Pentecost 7: Colossians 2:6–19

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses… vs. 13

Our prayers are offered as the response of faith to the Lord who has given us life, redeemed our lives and empowers our new life of prayer, faith and love. Daily life is lived with this joy and peace which takes everything to the Lord in prayer.

Old Testament Reading for Pentecost 7: Genesis 18:20–33

Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Vs. 27

As Abraham pleads with the Lord over S***m and Gomorrah, his prayer comes from a humble heart which knows its position before the Holy and Almighty God! Our prayers should be put forth from this same humbleness that recognizes to whom we are praying. Yet faith in the Lord prays, asks, seeks and knocks confident the Lord hears and will answer our prayer even if it may not be the answer we want nor what dust and ashes deserves.

Introit for Pentecost 7: Psalm 119:145–149; antiphon: Psalm 50:15

I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. Vs.146

What is the purpose of your prayers? Is it merely to save yourself? Saved for what? Our prayer for salvation has a larger purpose than saving ourselves. By faith we pray that the Lord will save us so that we may glorify Him, keep His statutes, observe His testimonies and hope in His Word. Any other prayer is from selfish ambition for worldly gain.

The 6th Sunday after Pentecost

One thing’s needful; Lord, this treasure
Teach me highly to regard.
All else, though it first give pleasure,
Is a yoke that presses hard!
Beneath it the heart is still fretting and striving,
No true, lasting happiness ever deriving.
This one thing is needful; all others are vain—
I count all but loss that I Christ may obtain!
LSB #536 vs. 1

O Lord, grant us the Spirit to hear Your Word and know the one thing needful that by Your Word and Spirit we may live according to Your will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Catechism Review for Sunday: The Apostles’ Creed

What is the 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed?
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

What does this mean?
I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.

Gospel for Pentecost 6: Luke 10:38–42

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Vss. 41-42

Many people’s anxiety about life and its daily struggles keep them from the one important necessary for life, faith and salvation – the Word of Christ. Apart from God’s Word there is no life, no faith and no salvation. Hence, each of us should hunger and thirst for God’s Word, setting aside the world’s demands for a time. Refreshed and renewed in Christ, we return to dsily life to live by faith in Him and with love for the neighbor.
