Zion Cemetery was established in the mid 1800s by early settlers of Freestone County, Texas. In the 1850s and 60s, Texas was the destination of many families, drawn to the better quality of life that the abundance of land and natural resources offered. After the Civil War many more families came seeking a place to start over. Upon crossing the Trinity River, many families began to settle in the a
rea around Sugar Hill, for its streams and natural springs. There the community of Doddy Hollow was established near a stream named Doddy Branch. Doddy Hollow was home to the G.W. (Wash) Walker; John C. James; Elisha Hobbs, Asbury Simpson; John Black; James Asbury Emmons; Timothy Green; William & Cornelius Monroe Anderson; Joseph Ervin McAdams; and Claridge families. Descendants of these early settlers gather annually on the first Saturday in May for a memorial service and lunch.
