Every now and then, we want to share something a little longer.

A few minutes from a message that might be worth sitting with.

That is the heart behind Sit With This.

Take a few minutes. Watch it. Think about it. Meditate on it. Pray through it. Maybe even come back to it later.

This week’s thought is about what we sometimes call our “programs for happiness.” The things we have learned to depend on to feel safe, secure, comfortable, or okay.

And many of those things are not bad things.

Healthy routines, rest, time outside, hobbies, taking a break, talking with someone, or practices recommended by a mental health professional can be genuinely good and wise. For someone walking through anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other real struggles, those tools can be an important part of navigating life well. That is not what this is speaking against.

The problem begins when a good thing becomes a ruling thing.

When I start believing, “I need this circumstance to go my way. I need this person to behave a certain way. I need this comfort, this relationship, this achievement, or this escape in order to have peace.”

Biblically, that is where we begin talking about idolatry.

And sometimes we do not just worship our own idols. We start asking the people around us to worship at their altar too. We expect them to meet the conditions we have created for our happiness.

God is not asking us to abandon every good thing that helps us through a difficult life. He is inviting us to stop asking those things to carry a weight they were never meant to carry.

“You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy.” Psalm 16:11

Ever start a quiet time with God, expect peace and get frustrated instead?

You're not doing it wrong. Centuries ago, a group of believers noticed the same thing and instead of avoiding the fight, they went looking for it. They packed up, left comfort behind, and went into the wilderness on purpose to face what was there.

We're not asking you to do that. But we are asking you to stay in the fight a little longer than you want to.

You finally get quiet. Phone away, coffee in hand, ready to meet with God.

Jesus knew this too. He was led into the wilderness — on purpose — to face what was waiting there. Solitude isn't always a retreat. Sometimes it's the battlefield where you meet the real fight.
