OLA Sacred Music

OLA Sacred Music Information and events as related to the Music Ministry at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Fairfield, CT. Cantate Gloriam Dei! Come, and worship the Lord!

As the united and worshipping community of Our Lady of the Assumption, we are called to take our part in the liturgy. Just as the priest has gestures and words that he must recite or sing in order for the Eucharistic celebration to be fulfilled, so does the congregation have its own role in gesture, word, and song. We are here to praise our God – just as the saints and angels are doing at the very

same time with us!

“Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people as “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people (1 Pet. 2:9; cf. 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their baptism.” ~ Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Chapter 1, II, 14

In practical terms, raising your voice to God during mass is a perfect example of how to fully participate in the liturgy. If you desire to become more immersed into worship, consider offering your voice and talents to the music ministry. You will experience the liturgy on a whole different level!

“The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.” ~ Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Chapter 6, 112

You are called, therefore, to participate in this universal art called music – and in the traditions of our church, sing the sacred texts and prayers in the form of Sacred Music.

As of today, all choir activities at the church have been suspended. This includes our adult choir as well as the resurrection choir. The choir loft is closed until further notice. We are following the lead of other churches in the area, and the recommendations of the town to help stop the communal spread of the virus. Depending on the length of this, we may have to alter the music for Holy Week and Easter. In the end, I am not concerned one bit about modifying our music. I am, however, concerned about the health and well-being of each and every one of you. To that end, we will need to take a forced vacation from our ministry. Please consider replacing your music commitment with prayer - we could all use some of that! Singing is a powerful form of prayer, so if you prefer to pray as such at home - go for it! I will keep you updated as the situation changes. Lets hope this is a short-lived hiatus.
