“Beyond the Surface” | Mark 9:1-23
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up on a mountain, and suddenly everything changes. His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear.
And a voice comes from a cloud and says, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.”
And Peter — true to form — starts talking about building tents.
We laughed. But then we had to sit with it. Because how often do we do the exact same thing? Standing in the middle of a God moment and completely missing it because we’re too busy running our mouths and pushing our own agenda.
Three things that stayed with us:
➡️ A glimpse that changes how you see Jesus. Your circumstances don’t define who Jesus is. Sometimes our biggest problem isn’t that our problems are too big — it’s that our view of Jesus has gotten too small. When we see Him for who He really is everything else finds its proper size.
➡️ A glimpse that changes who you listen to. Jesus doesn’t share the spotlight. He doesn’t belong in a lineup. And God isn’t waiting to hear our plans — He’s trying to get us to listen to His. Our perspective is limited. Jesus’ perspective is eternal. That’s not even close.
➡️ A glimpse that changes how you endure pain. This is the one that stayed with us longest. The Jesus you saw on the mountain is still Jesus when you get into the valley. God’s plan doesn’t always move from glory directly to glory. Sometimes His road to resurrection goes straight through suffering. Don’t judge the whole story by the chapter you’re living in right now. And don’t ever mistake the presence of pain for the absence of God.
What you see in your circumstances right now isn’t all there is to see.
