HAPPY EASTER, FAIRFAX! We live with joy because Jesus is ALIVE!

"Always be joyful because you belong to the Lord. I will say it again, be joyful!" Phillippians 4:4 NIrV

This week started with people gathering and shouting “Hosanna”. Now? Silence.

Jesus has died, been removed from the cross, wrapped in cloth, and placed in a tomb with a stone covering the entrance. Guards were posted to ensure nobody took Jesus’ body.

In Bible times, Saturday was the Sabbath, a time of worshipping God and not working. This Saturday was a day of silence. A day when those who knew Jesus were reflecting on all He had told them and trying to understand completely. What do you think those people were feeling? Remember that thousands of years later, we can sit in this silence knowing that the most wonderful thing ever is about to happen!

After the Passover meal, soldiers arrested Jesus in the garden where He had been praying. Jesus was put on trial, sentenced to death, and nailed by his hands and feet to a wooden cross. While Good Friday ends with the sadness of death, remember God had a plan. Jesus came to be our Savior!

Jesus and his disciples ate a meal together (called Passover meal) to celebrate a part of the Jewish history – being removed from slavery in Egypt. This would be Jesus’ last meal before His death. During the meal, Jesus tore bread and called it His body and help up a cup calling it His blood. This was Jesus’ way of saying God was making a new promise – everyone who trusts Jesus would become part of God’s family.

At a friend’s house one night, a woman poured an expensive perfume on Jesus’ head! The disciples thought she was wasting the perfume. They thought she should have sold it. Jesus explained that what she had done was a beautiful. She had anointed Him – showed love, honor, respect, worship. What are some ways you can show honor and love to Jesus today?

Jesus was frequently teaching – the disciples, the temple leaders, anyone who would listen. He always shared how wonderful God is. Jesus wants us to love God with everything, completely. He commands that we love each other the same way. Love God. Love others. How can you show love to God today? How can you show love to others?

Temples in Jesus’ time had courtyards that would have been busy, smelly, and noisy. Jesus visited one such temple and got so upset at what he saw. Everything there was distracting the people from worshiping God. Today, is no different. There is so much noise in the world. So many distractions preventing us from continually singing praise to God, praying to Him, or reading our Bibles. How can you stop and worship God today?

What if we reimagined Palm Sunday as a parade! Almost everybody loves a parade. Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem while the people waved palm branches and shouted “Hosanna! Blessed is Him who comes in the name of the Lord.” (Mark 11:9). What an amazing holiday parade! Spend today praising Jesus, the Son of God sent to save us.
