What a blessing it has been to watch God at work in our church family over the past several years.

This journey has been filled with prayer, learning, growth, encouragement, and faith. Together, we have celebrated milestones, supported one another through challenges, and trusted God’s leading every step of the way.

On Sunday, June 7 at 3:00 p.m., Dave will be ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament. We invite you to join us as we celebrate this special moment in the life of our church. It is a time to give thanks for God’s faithfulness and for the many ways He continues to call and equip people for ministry.

This celebration belongs to our whole church family, and we would love for you to be part of it. Following the service, please stay for fellowship and refreshments as we continue the celebration together.

Sunday, June 7
3:00 p.m.
First United Presbyterian Church
2310 H Street, Fairbury

We hope you can join us as we give thanks to God for all He has done and all that lies ahead. ✝️

In 1941, C.S. Lewis warned that one of the enemy's favorite tactics is to keep our attention fixed on either the past or the future. Why? Because when we are consumed by what has been or what might be, we neglect what is. The past exists only in memory. The future exists only in anticipation. The present is where life actually happens.

Lewis wrote, "The present is the point at which time touches eternity." In other words, this moment...right now...is the only moment that is truly real. It is the only moment we can experience, the only moment in which we can love, serve, forgive, grow, or encounter God and one another.

That insight feels especially relevant today. We live in the midst of a mental health crisis, and many people wrestle with anxiety, depression, or both. Some have described depression as being trapped in the past and anxiety as being trapped in the future. While those struggles are far more complex than a simple definition, there is wisdom in recognizing how often our minds pull us away from the present moment.

We replay old mistakes. We worry about tomorrow's problems. And in doing so, we can miss the gift of today.

Jesus reminds us that we do not need to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Easier said than done, I know. But perhaps the first step is simply learning to be present...to notice the moment we are living in and embrace it fully.

We worship this morning at 10:30. Wherever you are, whatever is weighing on your mind, we invite you to set aside yesterday's regrets and tomorrow's worries for just a little while and join us in the present moment.

We would love to see you here.

It is Memorial Day weekend…a time set aside to remember the men and women who laid down their lives so that we might live in freedom.

We speak their names…we honor their courage…we remember their sacrifice. These are not abstract heroes…they were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors. They had futures…plans…dreams. And yet, they gave it all up.

We are reminded of the words that Jesus Christ spoke in John’s gospel: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

On this day, those words hit differently. Because we have seen them lived out…on battlefields…in distant lands…in defining moments where courage overcame fear. But these acts of sacrifice…as powerful as they are…do not stand alone. They point us to something greater…something deeper…something eternal.

Because Jesus was not only describing what love looks like…He was revealing what He Himself would do.

The men and women we remember gave their lives to protect freedom for a nation. Jesus gave His life to restore freedom for all humanity.

They died for people they knew…and for people they would never meet. Jesus died for people who would never deserve it…for enemies…for sinners…for us.

And so this must be more than remembrance…it becomes a calling.
Because if this is the greatest form of love…then we are not simply called to admire it. We are called to reflect it…to live lives shaped by sacrifice…by courage…by love that costs something.

Not all of us will be asked to lay down our lives in the same way. But every one of us is called to lay down something…our pride…our comfort…our self-centeredness…our time…our resources…for the sake of others.

So today, we honor the fallen…rightly and gratefully. But we also look to the cross…and we remember that the greatest sacrifice ever made was not just an example to admire…it was a gift to receive…and a pattern to follow.

Greater love has no one than this…and because of that love…we are free.

We worship today at 10:30am…we would love to see you here.

Good morning, Fairbury…I pray that as you read this, you are safe.

Driving through town this morning, the storm damage was apparent. Trees are down everywhere…some on buildings, some on cars. Sheds and carports have been moved from where they once stood, and I’m sure there is much more I didn’t see.

Reports are saying winds reached 85 mph, and from what I can see, that seems about right.

As for my family, we lost several trees and have been without power since late last night…but we are ok. I pray that you are as well.

The church appears to have come through it safely…just a few branches in the parking lot, but no visible damage and the power is on. So this morning, we will worship. We will pray for one another. We will give thanks for our safety. And we will lift up those in our community who may have lost much more.

There is another round of storms possible tonight…so this truly is the calm between the storms.

I know there is work to be done and cleanup ahead…but for now, we will gather. We will pray. And we will worship the God who is with us…even in the storm.

The lights are on, and the coffee is hot.

If you’re reading this, you are welcome. We worship this morning at 10:30am and we would love to see you. Stay safe, Fairbury…and may God bless our community.
