Diocese of Fairbanks Office of Faith & Family Formation

Diocese of Fairbanks Office of Faith & Family Formation This office is based on the vision of the encyclicals Evangelium Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) and Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love).

The philosophy of the Office of Faith & Family Formation is based on the vision of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, in his encyclical Evangelium Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) and the post-apostolic exhortation on the family, Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love). It will operate with the following premises in mind:
• The various vocations of the Church (married life, priesthood/religious life, lay single life) are not cultivated in isolation but born from and nurtured within the family;
• The family, as the fundamental building block of the Church and society, is the primary source of faith formation, vocation discernment and an individual’s first understanding of God the Father;
• Faith is the result of cultivating a personal relationship with the person of Jesus Christ within the community of believers, the Church;
• Relationship with Jesus Christ opens the individual and community up to an indwelling of the Holy Spirit who motivates missionary disciples to go out and proclaim the Gospel in their given vocation. With the aid of regional coordinators and collaborators, the Office of Faith and Family Formation will coordinate support for catechetical and sacramental formation for individuals and families, from womb to tomb, using a whole family catechesis model that relies on the gifts and strengths found in diverse communities and cultures of the Diocese of Fairbanks, recognizing that each parish, community and region has unique needs. It will empower parents and extended family members to be the first and primary teachers of their children in the faith so that they can build a strong and lasting relationship with Christ and His bride, the Church.

I’ve been down in Oregon for the past few days. I had the opportunity to concelebrate the re-dedication of St. Joseph Church in Salem, OR on the 3rd anniversary of the fire that severely damaged the structure. It was an amazing celebration with overflow into the gym and parish hall.

I was also able to spend the day visiting our seminarian, Solomon Youngbird, at Mt. Angel Seminary. Solomon is in his first year of formation along with 32 other men!

Today we celebrate St. Lawrence! St. Lawrence was a Deacon entrusted with the care of the poor of Rome. In an attempt to torture him to learn where the funding came from, he was grilled alive, but through extraordinary grace he instead made light of his suffering. His Basilica in Rome is an ancient church which is a member of the Seven Churches Pilgrimage, where he rests with the other great Deacons of the early church, St. Stephen and St. Justin Martyr. Please pray for our Deacons today!

Happy Feast of St. Dominic! This day holds special significance for our Bishop Steven, as he celebrates the founder of his Order. St. Dominic lived in a tumultuous time in the Church, when the Gnostic Cathar heresy swept through the West. He defeated the Cathars through preaching and the promotion of the Rosary. According to legend, he shared it with St. Francis, which is why all friars now carry one on their belts.

Happy Feast of the Transfiguration! This celebration was turned into a universal feast by Pope Callixtus III after the victory of allied Christian forces against the assault of the city of Belgrade by the Ottoman Empire in 1456. This feast has long been a source of artistic inspiration for both the East and West. To this day, a church stands on Mount Tabor, where the miraculous vision of Christ glorified first occurred.

Happy Feast of St. Jean-Marie Vianney! We intimately know this shepherd of souls as our Diocesan Prayer for Vocations directly implores his intercession. His heart, which blazed with charity for his people, has become a precious relic, even once toured across America through the efforts of the Knights of Columbus. Please pray for your parish priests today!

Happy Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori! Founder of the Redemptorists, he was responsible for the popularization of one of the most powerful Marian icons, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which today sits in the Roman church which bears his name. He is also the patron of Moral Theologians. Please pray for all those who study the moral teachings of the Church, that they may always lead others to live in accord with human nature elevated by grace!

Happy Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the father of the Jesuits! Like many lands in the United States, the evangelization of Alaska would be nothing without their work, inspired by this champion of the Faith. It is again a bittersweet feast this year, as the time of the Jesuits has come to an end in our Diocese. Please pray for Fr. Rich and Fr. Tom as they transition to ministry in the lower 48!
