Welcome
Confession and Forgiveness
P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,

C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and one another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
P: Compassionate God,
C: we confess that we struggle to embody your goodness in the world and in our own hearts.

Turn our hearts back to you.
Restore our world and reconcile us to one another.
Renew us to live as your holy people, following the way of Jesus Christ.
Amen.

C: Amen.
WORD
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
First Reading
Isaiah 5:1-7
A reading from Isaiah, chapter 5.
1 I will sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
2 He dug it and cleared it of stones and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it and hewed out a w**e
vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded rotten grapes.
3 And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.
4 What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done
in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield rotten grapes?
5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.
6 I will make it a wasteland; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his cherished garden; he expected justice but saw bloodshed;
righteousness but heard a cry!
Word of God, Word of Life.
C: Thanks be to God. Psalm
Psalm 80:7-15
Refrain: Look down from heaven oh God; behold and tend this vine
7 Restore us, O | God of hosts;
let your face shine upon us, and we | shall be saved.
C: You have brought a vine | out of Egypt; you cast out the nations and | planted it.
9 You cleared the | ground for it;
it took root and | filled the land.
C: The mountains were covered | by its shadow and the towering cedar trees | by its boughs.
Refrain: Look down from heaven oh God; behold and tend this vine
11 You stretched out its tendrils | to the sea and its branches | to the river.
C: Why have you broken | down its wall, so that all who pass by pluck | off its grapes?
13 The wild boar of the forest has | ravaged it, and the beasts of the field have | grazed upon it.
C: Turn now, O | God of hosts,
look | down from heaven;
15 behold and | tend this vine;
preserve what your right | hand has planted.
Refrain: Look down from heaven oh God; behold and tend this vine
Second Reading
Philippians 3:4b-14
A reading from Philippians, chapter 3.
[Paul writes:] 4b If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more:
5 circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;
6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
7 Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ.
8 More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all
things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law but one that
comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith.
10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death,
11 if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal, but I press on to lay hold of that for which Christ has laid hold of me.
13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have laid hold of it, but one thing I have laid hold of: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal, toward the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
Word of God, Word of Life.
C: Thanks be to God.
Children’s Sermon
Gospel Acclamation
ELW p. 171
Gospel
Matthew 21:33-46
P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
[Jesus said:] 33 “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a
vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a w**epress in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went away.
34 When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce.
35 But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again he sent other slaves,
more than the first, and they treated them in the same way.
37 Then he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.’
39 So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.”
42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’?
43 “Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces its fruits.
44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them.
46 They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.
This is the Holy Gospel, the Good News of our God.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
Sermon
Silence for reflection follows the sermon.
Hymn of the Day
There in God’s Garden 342
Nicene Creed
P: With the whole church throughout time, let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:
C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Days of Elijah
These are the days of Elijah, declaring the word of the Lord,
And these are the days of your servant, Moses, righteousness being restored.
And these are the days of great trials, of famine and darkness and sword; Still we are the voice in the desert crying, Prepare ye the way of the Lord.
refrain: Behold, he comes, riding on the clouds, shining like the sun, at the trumpet call; Lift your voice, it’s the year of Jubilee,
and out of Zion’s hill salvation comes.
And these are the days of Ezekiel, the dry bones becoming flesh And these are the days of your servant, David, rebuilding a temple of praise And these are the days of the harvest, the fields are as white in your world
And we are the laborers in your vineyard, declaring the word of the Lord.
refrain: Behold, he comes, riding on the clouds, shining like the sun, at the trumpet call; Lift your voice, it’s the year of Jubilee,
and out of Zion’s hill salvation comes.
There is no God like Jehovah... refrain: Behold, he comes, riding on the clouds, shining like the sun, at the trumpet call; Lift your voice, it’s the year of Jubilee,
and out of Zion’s hill salvation comes.

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
First Reading
Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32
A reading from Ezekiel, chapter 18.
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, “The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”?
3 As I live, says the Lord GOD, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel.
4 Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins who shall die.
25 Yet you say, “The way of the Lord is unfair.” Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair?
26 When the righteous turn away
from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed, they shall die.
27 Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall
save their life.
28 Because they considered and turned away from all the
transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die.
29 Yet the house of Israel says, “The way of the Lord is unfair.” O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair?
30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise
iniquity will be your ruin.
31 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel?
32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord GOD. Turn, then, and live.
Word of God, Word of Life.
C: Thanks be to God. Psalm:
Psalm 145:1-8
Refrain: Remember oh Lord your passion and love.
1 To | you, O LORD,
I lift | up my soul.
C: My God, I put my trust in you; let me not be | put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph | over me.
3 Let none who look to you be | put to shame; rather let those be put to shame | who are treacherous.
C: Show me your | ways, O LORD, and teach | me your paths.
Refrain: Remember oh Lord your passion and love.
5 Lead me in your | truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all | the day long.
C: Remember, O LORD, your compas- | sion and love, for they are from | everlasting.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth and | my transgressions;
remember me according to your steadfast love and for the sake of your good- | ness, O LORD.
C: You are gracious and up- | right, O LORD; therefore you teach sinners | in your way.
9 You lead the low- | ly in justice
and teach the low- | ly your way.
Refrain: Remember oh Lord your passion and love.
Second Reading
Philippians 2:1-13
A reading from Philippians, chapter 2.
1 If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy,
2 make my joy complete: be of the
same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.
5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God exalted him even more highly and gave him the name that is above every other name,
10 so that at the name given to Jesus every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence but much more now in my absence, work on your own salvation with fear
and trembling,
13 for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and
to work for his good pleasure.
Word of God, Word of Life.
C: Thanks be to God.

ELW p. 171 Gospel
Matthew 21:23-32
P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
23 When [Jesus] entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
24 Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I
do these things.
25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human
origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’
26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for all regard John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
28 “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’
29 He answered, ‘I will not,’ but later he changed his mind and went.
30 The father went to the second and said the same, and he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go.
31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.
32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him, and even after you saw it you did not change your minds and believe him.”

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people
for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
The Lord’s Prayer
P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:
C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Communion Prayer

Christ our Lord. Amen.

Preface
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior
Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
